I'm going to try my hand at another dark beer today, hope this one is drinkable. Fingers crossed! Also, will be first brew using new (to me) kettle, burner, cooler mash tun (first time not BIAB), and new water and water additions. Maybe I'm changing too much at once? lol

You should be fine. Make sure your water additions are into your mash water, don't put them in after the mash.mikeorr wrote:I'm going to try my hand at another dark beer today, hope this one is drinkable. Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
If you're not using all of your brewing water in the mash (ie: you're doing a sparge), I believe you should split your water additions. You want to calculate mash water additions based on the volume of water in the mash, and then add the others to the boil. If you add all of your water additions to the mash water, and you're doing a sparge, the mash water won't match the water profile that you're going for.Keith wrote:You should be fine. Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
I agree with Jimmy - split your water additions between your mash and sparge if not doing a full volume mash.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Since I can't tell how much is left in my keg, they really need a sight glass, I've started my second Festa brew so I'll have more ready when I do run out.
Trying the wheat beer this time. I know it's more of a summertime drink but I'm working my way up the IBU scale. Don't really care for really hoppy beer like Propeller, or maybe I do but just don't like Propeller, so each brew I make will be higher until I find my limit. Anyway, it was either this or the dry brew so I went with this one. Surprised it didn't come with a wheat beer yeast though, so hopefully the ale yeast will work oK.
So much to learn in making beer. Before I just opened a Keiths, poured it in, and thought that was all there was.

Currently on tap:
1) Festa Brown Ale
2) Festa Pale Ale
3) Best Case Northern Lights
4) Festa Continental Pilsner
In the bucket: Empty
In the carboy: Empty
Buy yourself a 24 and you'll be happy for a weekend. Teach yourself to homebrew and you'll be happy for a lifetime.

What type of yeast does the wheat come with? US-05?
Edit: Nevermind - I just looked on their website and it lists S-04..would have figured they'd use US-05.

Brewing up my Big Spruce comp beer this eve
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Wheat beer is a great year-round beer, so no worries there. It is probably an American Wheat, so a German Wheat yeast might be inappropriate. They would both have significant wheat malt, but the German would probably use Pilsner malt instead of 2-row as the rest of the base. And Am wheat tend to be more bitter than the German Weizen equivalents, but both are much lower than IPA level, so should still stay in your preferred range.the-mailman wrote:Since I can't tell how much is left in my keg, they really need a sight glass, I've started my second Festa brew so I'll have more ready when I do run out.

Speaking of which, lots of different hop-forward beers out there, not just Propeller, so it may be worth trying others. Rockbottom Fathom is an award-winning one, Red Racer IPA at Premier or Stillwell is another.
But if you don't like hop-centric beers, no problem! Plenty other styles to brew and enjoy.
Yes, the process is a bit more than driving to the LC and grabbing a case, but when you're drinking a pint of your own, it's hard to beat the feeling if satisfaction.
And so ends my Sunday morning motivational speech. I'm off to brew a German Hefeweizen myself in a few minutes. We can share a pint of it sometime. Cheers!

Jimmy you just use the same pic and describe different things don't you

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
I guess it depends on what day of Dec you are, but I figure a month is long enough. Worst case scenario, I could force carb if primary doesn't leave me enough time to bottle condition.
