Sounds like you've got it sorted out, but I can certainly give you one of the 12V adapters Tim gave me - I actually have some larger ones too if you really want to crank it up!
Also just to put in my 2 cents, I found if you don't put some space between the fan and the magnets, it screws up the fan motor. Also, the computer fan system (at least the one I built) really struggles with 5L flasks. I was considering buying a 200rpm gear motor to experiment with. Lastly, you'll also need some sort of a voltage controller for your fan (though if you are mounted the magnets direct, it may slow it down enough but also several decrease the life of the fan). I bought something very similar to this off ebay and had great success: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Desktop-Computer ... 35c38a7e3e

yeah, the diy thing i read was suggesting a steel disc or washer between the fan and the magnets, and a rheostat for speed control. out of curiousity, the 12V adaptors you have - do they have whatever they once plugged into? (ie, the female adaptor). having a power cord i could plug in and out would be handy.Jayme wrote:Sounds like you've got it sorted out, but I can certainly give you one of the 12V adapters Tim gave me - I actually have some larger ones too if you really want to crank it up!

so yours struggles with the 5L flask - is that because of the fan, the magnet, or the stir bar?

I'm not so sure about steel - since it can be magnetized, it might not help. I'm not totally sure what you mean about the adapters, but they are in two pieces - power cord and adapter with barrel connector on the end.CorneliusAlphonse wrote: yeah, the diy thing i read was suggesting a steel disc or washer between the fan and the magnets, and a rheostat for speed control. out of curiousity, the 12V adaptors you have - do they have whatever they once plugged into? It's the fan - not enough torque.

On the lab units I have, the motor has a hard time at low speeds after adding the magnets. I think it drags on the motor somehow.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

what type of device would use this type of wall wart?TimG wrote:Found a 12V DC power adapter (wall wart). It is rated at 200 mA, that enough for your fan Liam? If so, it's yours. Can likely get it to you this weekend sometime, unless you 'really' want to trek out to Timberlea.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Most larger sized USB hard drive enclosures use them.bluenose wrote:what type of device would use this type of wall wart?TimG wrote:Found a 12V DC power adapter (wall wart).
