Beer Won't Clear
I brewed an APA 4 weeks ago. Took a while to finish fermenting (3 weeks), used US05. Now in fridge for 5 days in hopes of dropping the yeast before kegging. The beer is still fairly murkey. Should I give it more time before kegging? Should I keg and add a fining agent?
Thanks,
Neil

Re: Beer Won't Clear
It might be chill haze, and that could take a long time. Personally, I don't worry about that stuff and keg beers fairly quickly, but you could fine it for sure.

Re: Beer Won't Clear
I would say chill haze as well. Funny some beers clear quickly and some don't. The last 2 I brewed decided on no secondary and those were the clearest beers to date. Can't quite figure it out. Enjoy all the same

I use gelatin in the keg to pull down chill haze. Works great, though the first two pints are murky.

I've done this on a few batches as well. Very easy to do. 1/4 cup of water heated to 150 degrees. stir in 1 tsp gelatin, then pour in your keg. purge air, and give it a slight rock. 2 days later crystal clear beer.adams81 wrote:I use gelatin in the keg to pull down chill haze. I don't think gelatin will drop chill haze, I'm pretty well sure you would need something like Polyclar to do that.
However I use gelatin all the time to clear yeasty beers especially those made with US05, which I find don't like to clear very fast.

Re: Beer Won't Clear
With my water profile (before I started "adjusting it") my beer clears "crystal clear" with US-O5 after a week primary ferment, a week of keg conditioning at room temp and about 5 days in the keezer. But I do use whirfloc at the end of the boil. That's without dry hops which will cause a haze.

It cleared all my hazed beer. Just need to chill them to around 4 degrees.Tony L wrote:I don't think gelatin will drop chill haze, I'm pretty well sure you would need something like Polyclar to do that.

I've used gelatin many times and there's been nothing it won't drop out of the beer, including chill haze

I have used it in a room temp carboy with no effect on chill haze but once I started chilling in the keg prior to treatment all of my beers are crystal clear.

Kegged last night. Added some gelatin to the keg, so will see what happens. I had enough beer left over to bottle condition a 6 pack...they don't look half bad.

Gelatin has worked very well for me in the past. I only do it for beers that are for the coors light crowd as they think there is something wrong with a little hazy beer.

Tell them to pick up a 12 pack of coors light on their way over.... then when they are leaving, remind them to take their coors light with them lol.gm- wrote:Gelatin has worked very well for me in the past. The beer cleared beautifully with a little gelatin in the keg. Tastes and smells great too.
