I have an electric hob and I read they break erlenmyers. Mine is a ceramic hob though, and I don't know if that might be ok.

Be careful of boil overs...it happens REALLY quick in a flask...don't ask me how I know

Also, mix your DME and water before heating.

My stove is ceramic as well. Fermcap is definitely the key. Sketches the hell out of me every time as well.

To the top croppers, how much do you collect? In the video Mark posted the guy took a jar of foam/yeast out. It was hard to tell the size.

I usually take a third or so of what's there.

Will that fill a mason jar? I suppose it depends.

I get maybe a cup or so, but then after settling in the fridge under the water it might be a quarter to a third of that. It's plenty to make a new starter though, or maybe directly into the next batch if it's soon enough.

given the topic of this thread I thought it would be handy to have this resource here. The link is a nearly comprehensive guide to handling yeast including plating and freezing.
