The proposal... Beer for Coors light drinkers

Post by Keith » Wed Apr 30, 2014 7:48 pm

So my sister approached me about brewing for a kegger she wants to have. I said sure but I can't really brew to accommodate the under developed taste buds you will have showing. She has evolved quite a bit. Drank a sample of my Belgian IPA, Stone Levitation Clone, and Allagash White Clone. Enjoyed all 3. I know I won't be so lucky. I'm thinking a really mild WFM Ale. Something with a nice body, but low bitterness. Does anyone have any recommendations? I need to brew enough for 2 kegs ( according to her), but I'll be providing 3. She's lucky I love her.

I'm thinking the following...
A really mild Pale Ale, more bitter and profound than a rolling rock but in along those lines, possibly a higher abv.
A cream ale along the lines of what I produced with the Calypso WFM.

However I'm also wanting to convert a few people. I don't want to hit them with a DIPA by no means. What would be a recommendation to provide that falls outside the Bud line up but would still be palatable to a lighter pallet?

FWIW American Light Lagers are one of the hardest styles to brew....you scared? :rocky:
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

A nice kölsch might work, dry and crisp like a lighter lager, but more flavourful

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA

If you have two kegs then you can make one of them lighter tasting and one with a little more pow. When introducing girlfriends to Picaroons beer I always start with the Dooryard and put a piece of orange in it. Its a hit every time. If the people are pounding booze I would avoid anything too malty or too dark as it can get a little much deep into an evening, but maybe just a nice APA or or a blond?

Sweetwater 420 Pale Ale Clone might do the trick.
Although ABV ranges between 5.3 and 6.3 on beersmith recipes.
The corporate beer drinkers aren't shocked by it though. Don't want to ruin their day by putting hops in their beer.

jtmwhyte and I did a double batch of a kolsch recipe he had, only he used the appropriate yeast to make a kolsch and I used us05 to make something closer to a blonde... both turned out really good. Maybe that's something you could do to kill two birds with one stone

You could go with a malty irish red with mild but balanced bittering

Sent from my C6616 using Tapatalk
Kegged: El Dorado IPA, Rocketfuel 2.0, Wet Hopped Pale, Ryrish Red, Marzen, BN Exchange Dunkel, BN Exchange NEIPA, Lies Lies Lies - Citra <0.5% ale
Fermenting: NZ Pilsner with Enigma, Strawberry brett cider

I was out lastnight and 2 friends stopped by to see if I was home, my son let them in and got them a beer.

Now I'll need locks on my kegs!

I always considered a Red Ale to be some kind of "gateway" beer. They'll most likely enjoy it, and will be proud of themselves for drinking a "dark" beer. :P
