RO Bottled Water

Post by LiverDance » Fri Dec 20, 2013 9:12 am

Does anyone know where to get some RO 18.9L bottled water in Halifax? My tap water is a little suspect lately and I'm not a fan of the results in the beer. Thanks

What does Noble Grape use in their stores for bottle filling - is it RO or just filtered? If you went to Burnside, you'd be getting away from the Pockwock Lake supply.

What is RO water worth? May be better to buy a unit yourself straight off. I have one and am very pleased with it.

I've been thinking about buying a RO unit, but was concerned about the capacity (you'd likely have to let the tank refill multiple times for the volume of water we'd be brewing with). I don't know how long it takes for the unit to refill, or if it's a fairly quick procedure.

I had one of these units, with a booster pump, years ago, and it worked very well. I was "making" 30-40 gallons of water at a time, which took 3-5h. Keep in mind that to "make" water, your consumption is at least double the final product.

I'm considering using the the big blue jugs of RO water to save the time and hassle. Does anyone else use these? (I'm on the Pockwok, and there is an unappealing dirt/earthy smell)

The blue jugs are what I'm looking for do you know where they sell RO jugs?

I typically purchase the gallon jugs of distilled water at Shoppers.

It's probably not the most economical solution, but it works.

I purchase the RO water from the Superstore here in Porters Lake to brew with. I am not sure if the other stores also carry it. They cost around $3.00 for the 18.9 L refill.

I have been for the last little while but I'm getting a carbon filter from Dave and going to try that out and see if it works for me.

I assume you use about 2.5 of the 18.9 liter bottles per brew day, or do you mix with other water? I'm just wondering about maybe diluting my tap water with this to bring down the manganese in our tap water. It would be hard to judge the mineral content doing this, but figured trial and error might work...or maybe I should just give in and buy a reverse osmosis system for the brewery!

I'm using 2 bottles per 22L batch. Try it out first, some of those RO filters are expensive

I was thinking about going with this system. I know X purchased a system through these guys a while back and is happy with it. It comes with filters to last 3-5 years.

Looks like a good deal, especially when you know it's decent quality from X. Having that will allow the spontaneous "I should brew" without having to go out and get water. That's why i'm getting the filter from Dave, I do that a lot :mebeer:

I believe I bought my system in 2005, maybe earlier. Money very well spent IMHO.

I use an under sink filter for drinking and brewing water:

I'm not a fan of RO water unless it is remineralized.
