Bottling Belgian Beers

Post by jason.loxton » Wed Jan 01, 2014 2:19 pm

I have 5 gallons of a tripel that I think I would rather bottle than keg. I don't want to do wire top bottles. What is the maximum number of volumes of CO2 that I can safely get away with in standard long neck bottles? Any preferences for specific types (I have a large selection and the interweb seems to think that some brand employ thicker glass).

I always reference Brewers friend for these kind of questions. It should steer you in the right direction.

I went with 3 volumes in various sized bottles from the liquor store. 600 ml to 750 ml bottles. No issues and the carbonation was high enough for me. None of the bottles were Belgian or any thick walled bottles that they use for high pressure beer.

I recently bottled some Saison to 3 vol CO2 in regular bottles (12 oz, non-twist off caps)... so far, so good. I've done it before with no issues.

I bottled a saison in a grolsch fliptop to a vol that blew the cage mechanism off and hit the ceiling when I cracked it. Best I can say, lol.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

I had 4 750 ml swing top bottles and had no issues with them blowing off at 3 volumes. I was kind of nervous as I had them beside my fireplace in the livingroom for 3 weeks. I put a heavy comforter on them just incase they blew. And no, they weren't that close to the fireplace, it is gas. Down in the basement now. When the swing top bottles were opened, they had a good pop sound to them. I'll keep it 3 volumes though and no higher.
