Bottling night for my first stab at using a style-specific yeast (White Labs Dusseldorf Alt). JZ's Dusseldorf Alt recipe. Fermented low 60's for 2 weeks and lagered for another 4+ weeks . I'm going to crack the first one on Christmas Eve. C'mon Santa!

I'm interested to come and do a brew with you...I think it's being planned. Much quicker/simpler and people win competitions all the time with partial grain. I believe Guinness has extract in it.

I'm an AG brewer and it's still basically a pot on the stove. Whatever works, right?keithforbes wrote:Not nearly as impressive as some setups.... haha. It's a pot and a stoveBut here is a pic from last nights brew.

Yep
I need a larger pot to accomodate my next brew. 11lbs of extract into this black IPA.
And yea Mark, it's in the plans for colaborative brew. I'm thinking the NY due to the busy holiday schedule we all have (atleast I have lol).

Re: Random brewing pics
Pretty primitive compared to a lot of the set-ups I've seen around here, but does the job for me. Been brewing for a few years from kits, always bottled until recently, so this is a technological leap for me. Newly kegged brews in me basement cold-room, including our first two batches from grain.
Recently acquired a load of 3Gal kegs and a couple of 5Gal kegs, promised the previous owner I'd put them to good use. Only problem is that now I have to go down to the (unheated) basement for a pint, can't just throw a six-pack in the fridge.
On that note, does anyone here have experience with piping beer vertically at home? I know some bars do 16' or more. Right above the cold room is our pantry, so it wouldn't be hard for me to run a line to the main floor of the house, would be close to the kitchen and in an inconspicuous spot. I have some suitable tubing and taps and I reckon I could get the distance down to 5-6' of pipe but it would be mostly vertical. Not sure how well my wee 5lb CO2 tank would handle that. GF is on board (bribed her by saying I could hook up a cider keg too) but I don't wanna drill holes unless I'm confident it'll work.
Any ideas/advice would be very much appreciated.

Re: Random brewing pics
No problem doing it, you just have to make sure you balance it. You may have to go with 1/4" (or larger) beer line instead of the more common 3/16" with that much height. Figure out what pressure your keg needs to be at (based on temperature) for the carbonation you need) then you just need to figure out how much line length/size to give you the pressure drop required. The extra height will add resistance as will the long beer line. Anywhere that the beer line can warm up will cause foaming issues when the beer in the line warms up.
There's lots of good calculators on the net, although I can't find one quickly right now.

Re: Random brewing pics
I have a 10lb tank and a secondary regulator that would let you serve at two different pressures.
I would love to do a trade for a 3 gal keg.

Re: Random brewing pics
Thanks for the info, I found the calculation online. To be honest I expected it to be a lot more complicated.
Sandy, I'd be happy to trade a keg if anyone's making the trip to PEI and back. I'm in central PEI and rarely make it over to the mainland.

I assume you are wrapping that up after heating. Reflectix and propane tend to not play well together.

My method is really similar but I throw an old beer store coat (weighs about 15#) works well only lost about 8 degrees over three hours on my last brew

Re: Random brewing pics
I put the reflextix on after mash in, you can see the velcro I put on the front so it wraps around. I use to use an old blanket but I was aiming for something a bit more consistant (and snazzy looking).

Jimmy and Becky, the moral of the last few posts is that you guys need to start making kettle cozies as well as BIAB bags. Although maybe call them something more manly...
