Corny Keg Repair

Post by Swine » Tue Apr 02, 2013 3:15 pm

Hi,
I am new here and have been enjoying reading discussion for a few months now.
I have a Corny Keg and the rubber at the top is lifting at 1 side.
I am wondering if anyone has any "tried" methods of re-attaching these.
I tried PL Premium but that didn't seem to work.
Thanks for any suggestions!

:welcome: You could try some JB Weld, available at Canadian Tire
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I have never used it on a keg, but Jb weld is some amazing stuff. If anything is going to do it I would say it would be that.

I used a GOOP brand product from Canadian Tire - just can't remember offhand which one. I'll check tonight as I still have the tube. It has lasted a year so far, no issues.

The biggest consideration with any adhesive is to get the two materials to stay together (clamps etc) while the adhesive bonds them.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Fill it with homebrew and turn it upside down :spilly:

Nothing will beat windshield urethane for this application. If you have a caulking gun, go to a auto window place and see if you can get a part tube. The shit is expensive to buy, maybe trade a couple beer for it. Think about what a windshield goes through in a run of its lifetime. I swear by that stuff for jobs like that. Caution, don't get it on anything you don't want it to be. You won't get it off very easy.

That's what the GOOP stuff reminded me of - the black urethane windshield adhesive. And yes, it was just as messy too!

Yup, that window stuff is something. Although the permatex line at CT can be pretty good if the surfaces are clean.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

It was the automotive grade GOOP I used.

Something like $10 at CT.

It's probably near the same stuff, and way easier to get. Good find guys!!!

Just to let you know, tried this out a couple of weeks ago, finally...
It worked great!!! I roughed up the keg with emery cloth and cleaned with rubbing alcohol.
Applied a crap load of the GOOP and piled 2 full kegs on top for weight, left it for a week or two and it is firm.
I wanted the repaired keg right side up so gravity would take any extra GOOP away from the lid of the keg, didn't want to seal that shut.
Thanks for the tips. :cheers3:
