My Pumpkin Ale Exploded!
I came home from my Mother's house in Cape Breton after less than 6 hours and no fermentation action to find the stopper and airlock blown clean off of my Pumpkin Ale. It seriously smelled like a pumpkin pie drank a beer and was murdered in my utility room.

Switch your airlock for a blow off tube. Has saved me from repeating the scenario you describe.
