People always associate plastic with scratching, but in my experience, it comes down to care. As far as O2, people have been using buckets for a long time, you just need to transfer when done fermenting. I'm not sure light is going to have much effect unless you ferment in the sun, lol. That being said, the $500 14.5 gallon conical is nice at a reasonable price, depending on shipping. I don't discount the savings of yeast harvesting though. When you start talking high gravity 10 gallon batches, the money and time savings aren't so marginal.jason.loxton wrote:Plastic seemed to have issues with scratching, O2 permeability, and light. I am sure that you could craft as concial from SS sheeting, but it hardly seems worth the effort when you can get professionally made ones here for ca. $300: http://conical-fermenter.com/products/conicals/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; These guys have a pretty good reputation and are providing the tanks for a lot of nano start ups in the states. Perhaps if some Brewnosers got together and combined shipping they could be brought in at a reasonable price.

P.s. I decided that unless one was interested in yeast harvesting (not a big savings at our level of production, esp. since we often switch between strains, unlike commercial breweries), if 10+ gallon batches were desired, simply converting a keg would be the cheapest and best option (see other threads on this forum).

Interesting... Did they make those conicals themselves? Were you out there? I've been meaning to get in touch with them to try and go out some weekend and take a peak/try the beer but just hasn't happened yet.

Just picked it off their facebook page. Looks like used equipment of some sort. Don't know about those huge doors in the front...but I do see a plastic conical on the left.

Remember these are US Gallons (3.79l), as opposed to Imperial Gallons (4.55l, what we use in Canada). Choose accordingly, folks.7.3 Gallon (28L) Conical Fermenter

I was thinking sanitation. I'm thinking those weren't for brewing, but maybe I'm wrong.

I think they're worried about the same thing. Is that a caulking gun hanging off the one on the left?Jayme wrote:mr x wrote:Don't know about those huge doors in the front...
