OBK liquid yeast
I got four vials of yeast in on my last order. First time ordering liquid yeast in the mail. I remembered seeing an ice pack option at one point, but didn't see it at check out (maybe I missed it). The package was pretty warm when i picked it up from the post office. I refrigerated immediately, and went to make a 2 L starter today. It's about 8 hours in and no sign of any activity at all. Has anyone else had success or issues with yeast from OBK?

I had no problems. I did get the ice pack, but it was warm when it got here anyway. Right in the fridge and made a starter a week or two later. I can't remember how long it took, but it took off with no problems.

Did it hiss when you opened it? What was the date of the vial? What yeast is it?
Prolly should have taken off by now, an additional 9 hours later.

Mine ( a month ago ) took a day to get going, but it was past the bb date. Since you just go it, it should be less than a month old as I just got some yeast from them that was 3 weeks old. Give it more time.

I've had yeast take a lot longer than that to start.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

Same here. And you won't always see crazy fermentation action with a starter either.mr x wrote:I've had yeast take a lot longer than that to start.

Have ordered probably close to 20 vials from them and never had a problem, sure some take a while to start but they have always come through eventually

Chalmers: Yup. Serious hissing. I shook before opening, and had to let out a lot of gas very slowly (and still had some gush out) Never used White Labs before so didn't know if that was normal. I refrigerated it right after getting it and have only had it a bit over a week. No activity this morning either.

The only way you'll be able to tell for sure is a gravity reading, I think.jason.loxton wrote:Chalmers: Yup. Serious hissing. Jason,
Let me know what strains you got. If you are still worried and if I have any in stock I'll replace them for at less then my cost.
...and FWIW I don't advertise the ice pack option cause I'll always add a couple of ice packs for free when I ship yeast. Yeast is a terrible thing to waste!

I had a problem with the Cry Havoc I ordered a few weeks back. Made a starter, but it never took. Chalked it up to not noticing the ice shipping option as well

Re: OBK liquid yeast
Thanks Dave!
Update: The starter did eventually get going. Took about 36 hours, but healthy ferment now. I will chalk it up to both cool conditions at my house and poor shipping/storage conditions from Canada Post (I think they might have had it stored near a heater at the post office, as the yeast vials felt warm to the touch when I picked it up).
