thermometer

Post by spuds » Tue Apr 09, 2013 12:48 pm

Just wondering what you fellas use for thermometers in your all grain set up. I think my needle probe is out to lunch. Nothing to expensive unless that is the way to go.
Cheers

I'm going to guess Thermapen will be the recommended thermometer - though I just use a cheap Taylor one that is quite accurate.

Thermoworks also makes cheaper units that are as accurate, just a little slower. The GB ones were only $13.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Paderno carries the thermoworks thermometers - not sure on price though.

That's the one I use, works very well and super accurate. It's a bit slower than the Thermapen, but still quicker than most digital thermometers.

So I recieved the pocket digital few days ago and decided to do a test against the one I have been using which came with the turkey frier. Looks like I have been mashing at 160 or 10 degrees out. My next beer is sure to be different. Although some of my beers have finished up around the right mark, some have not and as high as 1022. Wonder if I have aquired a taste for these beers. Should be interesting.

Good reminder: any new thermometer, or periodically for your existing thermometers, should do a check of the temp. Even if they're off, you can still use them, just take note of how much off at what temp.

to check? Make an ice bath for your Zero, and boiling water for your 100.

Got a Thermoworks pocket digital at Paderno in SJ for around $30 I think, was a while ago. Good litle meter, very quick and accurate.

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA
