Score of the day!

Post by canuck » Fri Mar 15, 2013 3:14 pm

A buddy of mine, whom is no longer brewing, brought over some equipment and supplies for me today. Two 55L kegs, a bunch of speciality grains, grain mill, STC-1000 temp controller, 10" sparge arm, a couple of SS thermometers, and a false bottom. And the price was right.......no charge at all. Very generous to say the least.

Spent this afternoon and polished up the kegs using one of my DA polishers. Stainless steel isn't the easiest material to correct and they are by no means perfect, but they look better though.

Best thing you can get if you're not looking for mirror finish is this:

http://www.amazon.com/3M-Stripper-Mandr ... B000BQT4UK

Can get them at Home Hardware. Use the mandrel and scrub disc in your drill (corded is probably better). Takes the shit right off, should take 30-40 mins. Then Use a buff wheel or disc with some liquid brasso polish. Looks like a brand new keg, nice soft stainless finish with no scuffs and almost no scratches. Makes a hell of a mess though, wear shitty clothes. Here's mine before and after.

A little off topic, but on the keg cleanup, I started with 320 grit paper and my sander to get the major crap off. From there, polishing compounds and pads from Princess Auto. It was messy - EXTREMELY messy - an outdoor project for sure. In the end, it looks good, but guessing the beer doesn't taste any better!! Picture shows before, after first polishing compound and final.

Gents, sweet job on the keg cleanups!! They turned out awesome! :rockin:

I simply used a 1500 grit Menzerna polish that I have for my detailing business........so it wasn't exactly the proper stuff for stainless steel. I'll have to take a look at my local Home Hardware for that 3M brush.

I had planned on doing that to my 3 kegs, just never got around to it.
