Washing/Collecting and freezing yeast for storage?

Post by mindless2 » Mon Jul 20, 2015 1:34 pm

I've been reading a lot about this.
Just wondering if many of you tried it?
Any tips?

Cheers
Todd

I'm thinking about it too. Tried once so far without success.
Trying a second time now, used a cup of wort that's actively fermenting and I have action in the vessel.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

I've been doing this of late. Half dozen batches. Washing the yeast after racking to secondary with about 1 liter of boiled (cooled) water. Collecting in a large pitcher and let stand till settles out and then pour off the liquid and put the remainder into Mason jars. Toss in the beer fridge until ready to brew. Let it warm up to room temp, pour off the liquid from the top and toss/pitch two mason jars for 5 gal batch (likely about 6 to 8 oz of yeast like stuff) in with the wort. No starter. 10 to 18 hours its perking like a champ. Yeast has only been about three weeks old in the fridge and no issues. I know, not the scientific way of doing business but it seems to be working.

I've washed yeast before...but lately just been saving the yeast slurry in boiled mason jars...works like a charm without any work

They slow frozen (alcohol bath) in the regular freezer (not the defrosting type), then stored inside a foam cooler with a couple of ice packs. ... yeast should be good for 3 plus years....
