PVC Braided Hose

Post by Jimmy » Mon Oct 24, 2011 3:57 pm

So I am trying to figure out what hose to buy. I've got high temp silicone for my wort transfers, but need something for my immersion chiller and to fill my pots with. I live in an apartment so I will be using this hose to go from the kitchen sink, out to the patio and back to the sink. I want something that is food grade, and is not going to cause off flavors.

I was looking at the clear braided pvc. Would this be my best bet?

I have used that stuff for years. I have to replace it every year though, it de-laminates with prolonged hot useage and kinks easier when that happens. It takes a year or so to happen though.

If you do use it, remember to tighten your clamps a second time with them hot.

if it's just for your immersion chiller... then there isn't really a need to worry about it being food grade (since neither it, nor it's contents will be in contact with your beer).

Yeah, I think it usually is white, maybe with some stripes.

maybe i'm paranoid, but i avoid using hot tap water to brew - i figure it might pick up bad stuff going through the water heater etc. just 2 cents!
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

I got my RV hose at Princess auto, it comes in 25ft lenghts and FWIW I always us hot tap water to brew.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.
