Stepped Starters

Post by Jimmy » Wed Feb 11, 2015 10:17 pm

Do you decant between steps, or just add more wort (provided you have room in the flask)?

Anytime I've done a stepped starter before, I've decanted, but I'm wondering if I really need to? I'm doing a 2L first step, a 3L second step, and have a 5L flask. If it doesn't make a difference, I'd prefer to just add new wort rather than decant and then add wort.

Krausen it. No need to decant. It's a lot faster since you aren't waiting for it to ferment out, but it also dilutes your main batch a bit (~10%).

Say what?

I'm referring to decanting between the steps. So I've got 2L going on the stir plate right now, and plan on either a)Decanting and adding another 3L of wort, or b) pitching 3 liters of wort on top of the 2L already fermented from the first step.

I know.
So why would that have anything to do with diluting the main batch?

I mentioned Krausen. I was suggesting you utilize the technique straight through. Fuck decanting.

Very well then. I just wasn't sure if I'd get the same growth rate without decanting.

Yes, I know I'm still adding just as much sugar for the yeast, but they are fucked up little bastids.

Not concerned about space, the full 5L shouldn't be an issue - it was more about growth rate and being lazy

Cell count won't be the same, it'll be less. Should still be within range, I think. Go calculate that.

While you're at it, grab Xman a new left foot to make up for the one his broken glass sheered off last night from the epic 3-legged coaster fail
