HERMS System

Post by Jimmy » Wed Oct 05, 2011 4:48 pm

Does anyone here use, or know much about the HERMS system? I am thinking about integrating this into my setup, but in ghetto fashion.

I am going to have a single tier with 3 keggles and was thinking I could setup a ghetto herms system using a immersion chiller in the HLT, and pumping the wort from the MT through the immersion chiller and back into the MT. I am going to be using a false bottom in the MT, and don't want to apply direct heat to avoid scorching issues. I know the keggles lose more heat than a cooler, so I was thinking this might be my best bet to maintain correct temperature in the MT.

Anyone see any problems, or have a better suggestion?

I'm pretty sure I've seen a similar setup a few times over on that other brewing forum (HBT).

Seems reasonable to me. It's basically the same as this build. Their build is a bit fancier, with a temperature controller and electric heaters, but it's the same idea.
