Keg Stories

Post by GuingesRock » Wed Dec 10, 2014 7:12 pm

Keith is trying to round up interest in a bulk used keg order. http://www.brewnosers.org/forums/viewto ... =13&t=7608" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

By the time you finished replacing O rings, miscellaneous posts, poppet valves, the occasional lid, refilled the co2 tank that leaked because of a faulty poppet, bought a new cat because the other died from the CO2 leak, cleaned the ceiling and walls after you and the room were sprayed with dry stout when you unhooked the keg and the poppet valve didn't seat, done that again, and again one more time, bailed out the keezer that filled up with a keg full of your favorite IPA because of another poppet failure ...by the time you paid for all that, you could afford 2 new Italian made kegs for the real cost of each used and "pressure tested" keg. Those words "pressure tested" are so reassuring.

Then there's the stress of a keg failure, which can shorten your life, or drive you to drink more than you really should, so then you have to buy more ingredients and make more beer. I remember a very distraught Brewnoser once sending out a mass PM because his lid wasn't fitting. ;)

That's based on a true story, a year in the life of Guinges, except the cat didn't die, but easily could have. It's sleeping mat was on the floor in the beer room. I fixed all the kegs (quality post assemblies cost $30 each) sold them, and bought new Italian kegs, only around $100 with a Brewnoser's discount at Noble Grape. OBK had them on sale recently too for around that. They will be trouble free and last you a lifetime.

Ps. The poppets in the AEB Italian kegs are not removable, don't try as you will damage them. They are clean in place by running fluid through them. The advantage of this is that the poppet valves always seat perfectly. And the connectors snap on like a charm.

To be honest I have four used kegs, had em for 4 years, replaced my o rings at the start ($10 for four sets) and none have caused me any trouble. Just as a counterpoint.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

I have 10 used kegs, and after replacing the original o-rings on some (some came from fellow Brewnosers or brewers who had already replaced the sticky pop soaked bits and pieces) at a price comparable to what Liam notes above, haven't had any issues. I replace the occasional dip tube o-ring and the occasional poppet as wear and tear dictate. I tear each apart every time I clean them.

I've had pretty good success with mine so far. Odd popped needs to be replaced (1 in 10 so far), and have replaced all gaskets and orings as a precaution. I'd still go with a cheaper ball lock and replace a few pieces.

Anybody have experience with the new blacktop kegs that Dave has been selling? I want to buy kegs but I don't want the black stuff that comes off the plastic on old Pepsi kegs.

But I love the dead cat part. That should sell some used kegs.

I replaced most of my poppets with the universal ones. My 10 used kegs usually are trouble free. I did, however, have a keg last year that leaked in the fridge after it was half empty. Now, since it was half empty it should of been trouble free right? Nope. I usually unhook the beer line if going away. Came home to beer on the floor and fridge. I just put a new floor down too. I now leave the beer line attached. Other than that, these kegs have been trouble free. I smuggled them up from the US 15 years ago when they were unavailable here or hard to get.
