burners and mash tuns

Post by mackay85 » Wed Nov 26, 2014 4:47 pm

I picked up a propane burner and pot set at Home Depot today for $40...pic below. they also have another one for $70. Also looking at getting a mash tun...would anyone know if a 5 gallon would work for Best Case kits, or do you need a 10 gallon?

I'd avoid the Best Case products.

Get fresh LME, grain and hops and make your own. Just ask If you need help.

BUt that said 5 gal will work but if you can get the 10.

Hi Allan,

The Best Case kits are extract kits and you don't need a mash tun in order to brew those. If and when you do move to all-grain you would need at least a 6 gallon cooler for the tun.

And to Sandy's point, when you want to get the fresh ingredients, let me know (I happen to know a guy...)

In the meantime if you have any questions just let me (or the forum) know and we'll be sure to help.

dave's (everwood) is great, but i wouldn't be scared of the best case kits being stale - they do sit on a shelf, but they probably have pretty high turnover. theyre fine. (but not as good as whipping something up with fresh-from-the-fridge hops)

and yeah you dont need a mash tun for the best case kits - they come with a disposable grain bag (i assume) and you just need a 15L pot.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

If you brew extract, try to do full volume, makes a serious difference in your beer. Forget the partial volumes and top ups. Also increases your risk for infection. I brewed it and moved on to all grain as budget permitted. Won't ever go back but if I do a batch to save time, full volume will be it. :cheers2:
