Smoker controller

I actually made this post yesterday but for some reason it didn't show up..

So I finally got around to building (and actually making work) a smoker controller. Been thinking/reading/talking about one of these for a while. Sure I could have purchased one for $200 or so, but what is the fun in that. Plus, this one is pretty neat in that it has great wifi/web access for complete control. Updates/modifications/etc are great as well.

Info here:

https://github.com/CapnBry/HeaterMeter/wiki" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I would say I have $150 or so into the build. No case yet, but I'll throw something together. I didn't follow the instructions exactly (different power connections, no button or screen).

Haven't done a low/slow with it yet (that is this evening's project for the beef ribs), but I did test it out making some quick burgers at ~ 400F or so. Worked like a charm, really fun to play around with.

Nice Tim. Way to keep the DIY attitude!

at 150 it's almost the same price as some of the others that are available aren't they?

I'm not sure what I have into mine, probably under $80. It's stand alone w/ PID though.

So I'm thinking of making one of these.. Tim - any more feedback now that you've presumably used it more?

I haven't been using it a pile, I was having trouble on windy days with not being able to keep the temp low enough. This was mostly due to my cardboard fan adapter to connect to the Kamado. Also, last time I attempted to use it couldn't' get the web interface to connect. The guy developing it seems to be making improvements all the time, check out the forum posted above, pile of info.

I'd still recommend it, but like anything DIY it takes some tweaking compared to the out of the box solutions.
