Maverick Probes..

Going to build a smoker controller (HeaterMeter, Arduino + Raspberry Pi) and need a couple of Maverick style probes. Where have folks been buying these? Or better yet.. can I just make these myself?? (I don't mind sourcing a couple of plugs, the required wire, shielding, etc.. ). I'd rather not spend $40 on a couple of probes, especially if they might melt on me like some people on here have reported?

Making probes is a bit of a pain if they are to go into food. If not, just shielded/twisted thermocouple wire is fine. No need for probes

I thought Maverick probes were thermistors?

Looks like the project uses the ET-73 or ET-732 probes, which I'm having a hard time finding the specs on (what type/resistance thermistors are they)? They must have a range of 300C as the units display to 572F.

If I can't make them myself, any options for buying these in Canada for less than $20/each?

So you need thermistors? The problem there is I think they come in different ranges. Can your hardware handle that?

I was thinking I'd try and match the 'range' of the ET-73 or ET-732.. if I could find the details on them. Seems to me I'd have to buy the appropriate thermistor, buy some stainless heat shielding, and some high temp wire.. and then 'jam' the thermistor into a food probe (either purchased or reused from previous thermometers).

Hence, maybe why it makes more sense to just buy the Maverick ones. But not at $20 each!

Maybe I'll just buy the whole friggin' thermometer..

Use the probes for both, could be used for non-controlled cooking (oven or grill for example).. with less setup than the controller (though I guess all I need is a plug for the controller at this point).

Only $20 more dollars than two probes!
