I think we should have a thread to compile the best (and I suppose worst) places to buy local meat, fruit, veggies, etc, in the province.

Meadow Brook Farm (not Jim Lamb's in Berwick) this one is on the way to Tatamagouche - great salami and ham plus free range beef, chicken, buffalo
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ebbetts-M ... 5540790508

John Duynesfeld does all pastured beef, pork, chicken (wings are amazing), etc. He does a dropoff in the city once a month.

Northumberland (Northumberlamb) Abbatoir in Truro. You can usually get a whole lamb for $4-5 / lb processed however you want (usually 50 lb depending on the time of year). northumberlamb@pchg.net , but best to call Mike Isenor at (902)893-8994

Natures Script Farm - just outside of londonderry. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Natures-S ... 3485714294 They have fantastic pork products (smoked chops, bacon, sausage) and do a meat CSA

Most of these folks can get whatever beast/size/shape, but it usually takes some lead time. i.e. free range Xmas turkeys etc.

I get a box of fresh local produce from taproot farm share weekly which has been fantastic. We also signed up for a monthly meat share which can consist of free range organic meat from oulton's, Martock Glen, or taproot.

Gateway Meat Market on Main street in Dartmouth usually has good deals on Chicken and Pork... The shoulders (for pulled pork) are a little small on the "shelf" but I'm sure they would sell them whole if we ask.. I will inquire next time I'm in there.

FYI, the new year for taproot CSA starts in about 3 weeks for anyone considering signing up.

Nature's Cove

My parents walked by this place the other day and they had a sign out front that said they sell bison. I'm not sure what they have - maybe it's just ground bison, but I figured I'd throw it up here for those that feel like checking it out. I'll likely take a run out at some point this week to see what they have.

They've been saying that they have quality meats for over a year. I've never been in but might give it a shot this week

Highland Drive has bison burgers (and lamb burgers) sitting waiting for us. They're a little on the thin side, but for those lacking a meat grinder it's good. I had a lamb burger last night and enjoyed it, bison tonight.

you can always just get the ground bison or lamb - I've bought ground bison (came frozen and vac-packed), and ground lamb (fresh, by the lb) from Jessi a couple times now.

The best pork in N.S. is bar none from Meadowbrook. As far as beef goes there are many that produce good beef but you will either have to travel a long distance or pay a small fortune for it. I would recomend either Oultens in Windsor or just go to Pete's. Pete's pork is exclusively meadowbrook and they're beef is all PEI gress fed atlantic beef and is great quality and good for you. I would personally suggest going to the Halifax one the Manager is an ex local chef and they are willing to do almost anything for you even custom grinding meat for burgers. The best lamb is by far from Bill Wood but its hard to get as every restauraunt calls dibs on that stuff before the animal is even killed so I would suggest just going with Northumberlamb which is also available at petes. Getaway is also a great place to go. They sell top quality and good tasting meats but they tend to be much leaner than most people are probably used to. It is I beleive certified organic and has a much different flavor which can be either good or bad depending on what your used to. Personally I like it but you will have to take care when cooking it as it will dry out easier where its much leaner.
