Re: Homemade Cheese
I want to make some mozzarella for thanksgiving. That's my rush, otherwise I want to make cheddar to start. I would love to get into soft ripened cheese and blue but that can wait.

This is the kit that I started out with for making Mozza. Inexpensive too.mgc wrote:I want to make some mozzarella for thanksgiving. That's my rush, otherwise I want to make cheddar to start. I would love to get into soft ripened cheese and blue but that can wait.

Re: Homemade Cheese
Group buy Yes!! I wanted to see if people would be interested in getting the industrial grade rennet because it stores for years unlike the other stuff. But its expensive but could buy a can and divide it up!sleepyjamie wrote:Group buy?

Re: Homemade Cheese
Ok, we should group buy. Lets move this over to the group buy section and we can put together what we want. When we have an idea we can then probably talk to both suppliers and see who gives us the best price. Or we can just use cheesemaking.com, either way lets un-hijack this thread and mvoe group buy talk over there.

Re: Homemade Cheese
Apparently there is something more serious than cheese hi-jacking - contraband cheese!

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/201 ... tions.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Niagara Regional Police officers have been visiting pizzerias in the peninsula recently asking one important question: where did you get your cheese? It’s part of a larger internal investigation into cheese smuggling, allegedly by some members of their own force.
CBC News has learned from numerous police sources that charges are expected soon against a few officers who are alleged to have been involved in the movement of caseloads of cheese from the U.S. to sell to Canadian pizzerias and restaurants.
The alleged scam involves jamming cases of "brick" cheese — used as a common pizza topping — into their vehicles to smuggle across the border. With U.S. cheese being as little as a third the price it is in Canada, drivers are making $1,000 to $2,000 a trip, according to numerous sources.
Canada Border Services Agency officials say anyone — officer or civilian — caught smuggling large shipments of cheese into Canada would be in violation of the Customs Act for failing to declare, and pay duties on, the controlled goods...
"He was gonna sell me a case for 150 bucks — normally its $240," Sebastiano said. "He can supply whatever I want. If I want five to six cases a week, he’d give me five to six cases because he can bring it to this side here, no problem."
Sebastiano said he tried a sample, admitting it was an attractive offer, since his business buys more than $100,000 a year worth of cheese. But he said he turned it down, because it was illegal — and the contraband cheese was inferior.

Tony, you said here viewtopic.php?p=54664#p54664" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that you make blue cheese. I would love to make my own, how did you go about getting into it? Did it take a couple tries, or did you get it the first time?

Nope, what I said was we had home made blue cheese and MY home made Gouda. Pete actually made the Blue Cheese and it was fantastic as was the rest
of the snack.

Just make sure it's USPS if it's coming from the US.

There are usually less fees involved when crossing the border by USPS.

Re: Homemade Cheese
UPS and other courier services have a nasty habit of tacking on outrageous brokerage fees that they don't tell you up front. If you use USPS, then Canada Post handles it on this end for a flat $8.
