Ahh, Icelandic restaurant prices.....I think that was the most expensive country to eat out I've been to, after Norway. I also remember reindeer and puffin being pretty widely available on menus in Reykjavik.
We were driving near Reykjavik and stopped at a property where they were hanging the fish out to cure for hakari....I still remember that smell!
Meat is Murder. Tasty, tasty murder.

I have had Whale as a younger fellow and wasn't very fond of it like I am of most marine animals, seal, sea birds and Porpoise included. We used to call Whale, Arctic Steak. Reindeer is Caribou essentially, and is tasty when not harvested in the rut.
Can't wait for the Moose hunt next week..

Whale can be excellent, but it has to be done right. Minke whale in nice marinate 1 min per side on a very hot frying pan is delicious, and kept me well fed during my undergrad years as it was the cheapest meat around.Tony L wrote:I have had Whale as a younger fellow and wasn't very fond of it like I am of most marine animals, seal, sea birds and Porpoise included. Same with sea birds, I usually went hunting for cormorants, murres, puffins and razorbills every fall. Done right they are delicious, but can easily be ruined so they taste like fishy oily chickens.
Not sure what they would use as counterfeit whale, as whalemeat is pretty much the cheapest meat you can buychalmers wrote:gm- wrote: Darn, $50 a plate is outrageous, 5 years ago you could buy a whole foal tenderloin for half that. I've heard a lot of good things about the horse sashimi, but I think that place opened up after I left. Guillemot eggs are delicious, fulmar and black back gull eggs are also pretty tasty, I miss eating those in the spring. Did you try smoked puffin? No, I didn't see it on the menu anywhere. I did see whale at a few spots, but I had heard reports of "counterfeit" whale being served, so I wasn't prepared to spend a lot to eat something else. I'm not really a seafood guy, but I was prepared to try it, to say I did. We also didn't make it to anywhere to try Hakarl, another regret. Found the sushi joint: Sushibarinn (also have whale nigiri).
Maybe I'll need you to send or smuggle me home some authentic cuisine if you are over there again soon. Or next time I get there, I need to be more adventurous. I'm glad my only regrets about Iceland are the foods I DIDN'T try, everything I did have was excellent.

The hakarl is a unique experience, you will have to try it next time!
Try any nice beers while over there?
