Jesus fock. I hope you all live long enough to get that espresso system you want.

Meanwhile, I'm pulling doubles in my kitchen tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. as I have been since 2008 :spilly:

My machine and grinder have literally paid themselves off at least 2 times, if not more by now.

And I'll be firing up the kettle at 5:30am for my Aeropress as I've been since 2011 when boy #1 was born.

I dont see an espresso machine as being any harder, just more expensive and less portable, which doesn't fit with me being poor and nomadic. I'd like to get one sometime.

Nice. Part of why I ask about the non-espresso options is I figure starting out with a good grinder is better than buying a machine and continuing to use a crappy grinder.

Where did you buy your grinder Jimmy - direct from Baratza? Or here?

I actually purchased it from Java Blend. At the time they were cheaper than idrinkcoffee.com - plus they're local.

Perfect. I've got to head that way Friday so I'll have to pop in. And you'd recommend the Vario over Preciso?

I had a couple problems with my preciso. First issue was something internal that they offered to walk me through or send a replacement - I took the replacement. The second issue was the burr holder cracked - they offered me a free burr holder (this part is designed to break if you run a rock or green bean through the grinder..I know that I did neither).

I've had the Vario for quite some time now and have had zero issues with it. I like the adjustability better, as well as the ability to set a grind time.

Yes I do

Seriously, you're in the right track grabbing the grinder first. Don't let them talk you into a Vario-W :cheers2:

Yes indeed.

I bought a Vario in 2010, it still works great and the macro/micro settings are great for honing it in.

Hopefully the messed-up batch of Guji is out the door by now. Over the weekend it was over roasted and disappointing.
Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.

So who has roasted their own beans? What's the advantage? Is it worth it?

Can you store green beans for a long time and roast a pound once a week or something like that? Not really looking at doing it anytime soon, just wondering what the benefits are.

The benefits are in designing your own roasts the way YOU like them, experiment with different roast levels, different beans, different blends...... It's generally recommended you use green beans within a year.

I have a decent little roaster I've been thinking about selling :cheers2:

Funny.

Becky's already told me I'm not allowed to buy a roaster until I've had my new brewery going for a year

y brother roasts in a frypan. Its good for French press (key is constant stirring) but he only does French press so I don't know what it'd be like for espresso. He does it cause its super cheap and you get fresh coffee without having to buy it every week

That's kind of why I was thinking about it. Right now I'm using between 1/2 and 1lb a week. I don't make a lot of trips in town when working from home, so it's kind of a PITA to go for beans. I was thinking if I could buy a decent amount of green beans and roast 1lb at a time, I'd be set!

Been day dreaming of this too. But Read up that doing it in the fry pan can really stink up the house. However, Ebay had these nifty little bbq roasters...

Ah depends how dark you roast, but if your kitchen fan exhausts outside it shouldn't be a problem. Kinda fun for sure!

It's been a while since I was in there, but in the Paderno store up at Bayer's Lake they had a small roaster on in their discount-to-clear area for several months. I believe it was $99. For all I know it's still there.
