Growing mushroom (non magical)

Post by Araxi » Sat Apr 06, 2013 3:57 pm

Hey has anybody here ever tried to grow mushrooms? I found this site http://www.wyliemycologicals.ca/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
this guy has simplified it to the point where he ships you a 7lb bag that has been inoculated and all that is required is ambient light and humidity. Btw shipping is 7 bux per bag, think I'm gonna order the Shitake variety.

I've grown Shitake's. They are awesome. Get two bags so you can put them on rotation, otherwise its a long wait between yields. You can force them prematurely, but I have never tried it. I hear they don't get as big. I also did logs from http://shiitakemushroomlog.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; They were great to deal with, and no issues at customs.

Its a shame the Chanterelle's on that site are "experimental and do not guarantee fruiting". I would love to be able to get my hands on some fresh chanterelles in NB.

I used to be a pretty intense mycophile, and tried my hands at a few species. I would *highly* recommend Paul Stamets' The Mushroom Cultivator. It is a great read! http://www.amazon.com/Mushroom-Cultivat ... 0961079800" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What a coincidence! I thought about growing my own mushrooms at home and was doing a little research on it just a couple of weeks ago. From what I could tell, it seemed pretty complicated. Is it expensive to get started?

Shane, if you go to that link that I posted this guy has simplified it to the point where all you have to provide is ambient light and moisture. I have already ordered the Shitake kit.

I'm on my phone so I'm not going to check the link but the one I did was cheap and easy to do. No more difficult then a fermentation schedule.

Thanks Bruce. This will be something else we'll have to chat about on Friday night when I come up. ;)

it pays off to have a good autoclave vs your standard pressure cooker. Reason being, a normal pressure cookers valve can slowly let contaminated air inside, jepordizing your choice substrate or medium.

I have already gone through one cycle, got about a pound. I soaked the block over night and now I'm hoping to start another cycle. Damn they are good mushrooms though.

How many cycles can you get out of one block?

I ordered a kit a last week and am anxious to get it started! Thanks for your help, Bruce! :cheers:
