Craycort grills

Post by dexter » Tue Jan 29, 2013 6:47 pm

So I've been looking for some alternative ways to smoke and cook on my egg, my issue has been adding wood chunks or extra charcoal. Well a quick google brought them up and it's a neat idea. What does everyone else use?

I'm confused. Doesn't you egg have a cast iron grill, or its the quarterly divided Craycort one you want? What has been your issue with adding wood chunks? I have a knock off egg, and I have yet to have any trouble with chunks.

Yes it's cast iron, for long cooks or for small fires it was a huge pain to take the food off take the plate setter and the grill off to add more of anything. So the divided grill I'm hoping will make it much easier to add lump or chunks in the event that I need to

I understand now. Mine has an removable section to the iron grill, but it doesn't help because if I am doing low and slow I have a deflector down closer to the fire box so I would have to take it all out anyways. That being said, I have done 10 hour sessions at 200-250 without having to reaload. Never pushed it pass that. How long are you smoking for?

I've done upwards of 12 but I find if I load the fire box with lump it sometimes heats up my plate setter so I only ever fill it partway, which usually means I have to reload after about 8 hours. Now that I've figured out the smaller fire for cold smoking it will be even more useful to be able to add either lump or smoking materials
