Capital Health officials are investigating a suspected case of Norovirus at a popular Halifax restaurant, after several staff members and customers got sick earlier this week.
On Thursday, some people who were at The Bicycle Thief complained of acute gastroenteritis symptoms.
"As the owners of The Bicycle Thief, we took a precautionary step to close the restaurant Saturday evening," said owners Stephanie and Maurizio Bertossi in a statement.
Individuals who had symptoms reported feeling better within 12 hours, they said.
Shauna Robar says she is still recovering after being sick for days.
"My friends and I went out for a celebratory dinner at The Bicycle Thief and we all had our dinners there and we were fine. And then all of us — for me it was around 1:30 in the morning — we all started getting sick."
"We were sick throughout the entire night. I've actually never been that sick in my life," she said.
Robar says one of her friends went to the hospital, where other sick people told her friend they had eaten at the restaurant on Thursday night.
The restaurant will reopen Tuesday. (CBC)
Stephanie Bertossi says 14 of her 80 staff members also got sick.
"We're unsure of what's going on right now. We've had a couple of clients contact us as well that they have become ill," she said.
Bertossi has closed the restaurant until Tuesday.
"We apologize to our loyal customers for the inconvenience and we look forward to Tuesday," the statement said.
Officials at the Capital Health District are investigating, the Department of Health confirmed.

I had Norwalk once and was out for nearly a week (and questioned if I would survive). If it's 12 hours, it's not Norwalk.

No I was really sick for days, but my stomach still doesn't feel right and I definitely got it at the bicycle thief.
Edit: Not to put down the bicycle thief. The food was good and seemed top quality, I bet this could have happened anywhere.

Might I suggest eating a whole container of "LIBERTÉ - Méditerranée Black Cherry Yogurt ", that'll fix your gut right up!!
always works for me

Over 200 passengers on a Carnival cruise ship that recently stopped in Halifax reported norovirus-like symptoms during a five-day cruise, which departed and ended in New York on Aug. 11.
Now some suspect that that outbreak is linked to the one at The Bicycle Thief restaurant in Halifax. It closed its doors on Saturday due to the illness.
According to its schedule, the Carnival Glory stopped in Halifax Aug. 9.
“During the last voyage of the Carnival Glory, which departed from New York on Aug. 6 and ended Saturday, Aug. 11, 212 guests and three crew members reported gastrointestinal symptoms over the course of the five-day voyage. There were 3,645 guests and 1,143 crew members on the Aug. 6 cruise,” says a news release issued by the cruise line.
The release said the next voyage “has been slightly delayed to allow for aggressive cleaning and sanitizing of the vessel.”
Lisa Drader-Murphy, owner of Turbine, a clothing store located on the waterfront next to The Bicycle Thief, said many of the ship’s passengers came into her store. Many were talking about the sickness aboard the vessel.
“It seemed that (all the passengers ) who came through the store were talking about it,” says Drader-Murphy.
Shortly afterward, Drader-Murphy said her manager fell ill with norovirus. Drader-Murphy herself became sick a couple of days ago and is still recovering.
“I will guarantee that Turbine and The Bicycle Thief were not the only businesses on the waterfront that had some incident of some people falling sick.”
Gordon Stewart, executive director of the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia, said he believes that the ship and the outbreak at the restaurant are linked.
“I highly suspect it is the cruise ship,” he said.
He said he would like to see some sort of warning for businesses when there is an illness aboard a docking cruise ship.
“It would give people a heads-up to be extra careful.”
Stewart was emailing Halifax restaurants Monday to see if there were any other suspected cases of norovirus.
“What we will be doing as an association is sending out a notice to restaurants, as we have done several times before, about the protocol for (norovirus) and how to deal with it,” he said

if anyone gets it again, hammer the immodium and gravol and you'll feel halfway human again. or not. i've tried both ways and while im not usually one for over the counter drugs, in this case i advise it
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Yeah, that probably would have helped immensely. At first I thought it was food poisoning so I didn't use drugs because I wanted my body to rid itself of the bacteria. I should have known that it is extremely rare for food poisoning to be that bad.

Well, that certainly makes sense. Cruise ships are notorious for this virus. Restaurants aren't - even dirty ones, which Bicycle Thief certainly isn't.
It's enough to make business owners question the value of catering to the Cruise trade.
Currently on tap: Nothing!
In keg: Still nothing.
In Primary: Doggone American Rye Pale Ale

I just realized I got sick at the Thief on the evening of the 8th and that article said the ship didn't arrive until the 9th...

Yeah maybe they have a broken fridge where all the meat is stored, contaminated prep area or not washing knives. Also something like a bit of rotten chicken juice in a busy area in a kitchen these past few weeks could spell disaster as bacteria could survive on damp areas when the humidity was as high as it was.

They're reopening today, so hopefully it's all systems go. It seems every time my folks are in town they're either full or closed. Dad has been wanting to go since they opened. Maybe he'll get lucky this fall.
Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.

Could have been but I was really sick for days. It would really surprise me if they were not on the ball, hygienically speaking.

Well then, sounds to me like you might be patient zero of the "Bicycle Thief outbreak". Congrats on shutting down a restaurant.
Seriously, I feel bad for you. People don't understand how terrible this is unless they've had it.

Not fun spending that much time being grounded on the toilet, and swinging your upper half into the sink at the same time

Wouldn't surprise me. It happens all the time but you don't always hear about it. Fwiw, I find the place somewhat overrated. Not on my list of return visits. Really loud too.

I've not gone there myself, but I heard the same thing from my friend who is a professional chef. She said it was ok - but doesn't live up to the hype.

I've not been to Bicycle Thief, but I thought that about Bish. Aside from this year's version I also think that about Nova 7 though. Good, but nowhere near as good as the excitement it generates from some people.

Is it just me or is that the general feeling about fine dining in Halifax? I've yet to go to the Bicycle Thief, so I can't comment on them specifically, but it seems once you're past ~$20 for the average entrée people don't seem to be raving about our options. There are lots of good picks in the $15-20 per item range that would keep me rolling through the doors (if I could afford to do that regularly.) In my experience, Bistro Le Coq is the only one where I had a meal where 2 of my 3 items were things I would order again.
