Hi. I'm Allie

Hi.

Um, well I'm Allie. I am originally from San Diego, California but recently (10 weeks ago) moved to PEI. I am a very proud beer drinker. I find it important to drink local and craft beers and while living in San Diego it was easy to drink craft beers daily. However, with my recent move to PEI, it has become more challenging to find delicious craft beer.

Two years ago I was living in Denver, Colorado on an exploration to find delicious, original, amazing beer and while living in Denver I started learning the mechanics of brewing and the importance of networking.

Now here I am on PEI, hoping to start brewing again and building a network of friends, educators, and beer buddies. I was told about the forum from my local homebrew shop. The owner thought I could find whole grains for brewing through the forum. I am going to go on record and say I am not a "forum" kind of girl, but I'm desperately in need of making contact with beer drinkers again. Moving from a city of 6 million to an island of 155 thousand has it's good and bad moments. Not having access to beer would be a bad.

Honestly, I'm hoping to learn more about brewing beer, about styles of beer, and with any luck make a friend or two along the way.

Prost ~Allie~

Hi Allie,
I am just starting out with brewing so I can't be much help with teaching you anything about brewing. But I do live in PEI as well so I thought I would say hi, as I am a beer lover and both just getting in to it here on the Island we may be able to be of some use to each others learning process.

Welcome! There are group buys for grain and stuff, buy you can also order from Ontariobeerkegs or Noble Grape and they will mail it to you. If you're in Halifax regularly, you could buy from noble grape too. Not sure of any PEI specific options though some of the locals from over there will probably chime in!

There are some decent "local" craft beers to be found in PEI if you haven't found them yet, Gahans 1772 IPA made on PEI is not bad, Garrison (from NS) Hopyard Pale ale is very good, and I am pretty sure I saw some Pumphouse (from Moncton NB) products there the last time I was there. No Denver selection, but at least it is something :D

Hi Allie, I also am from the Island (born and raised), and am a beer enthusiast! There is nothing in terms of malts and hops here but we have a few homebrew shops in Charlottetown where you can get supplies or kits. To get you going you can grab malts and hops online (if required), I usually order those supplies from Beer Grains Supply (http://beergrains.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) but there are lots of reputable companies out there. Also keep an eye on the Alelanders section of the forum (http://www.brewnosers.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=34" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), there are monthly meetings where people form the island meet up, share their beers and discuss all things beer! I haven't actually made it to a meeting yet (still pretty new here myself) due to scheduling conflicts but am hoping to make it to the next one in April. Anyway, welcome aboard! Hope to see you around!

Matt

Welcome. As an Islander myself, I can understand the frustration you have regarding getting good beer.
But that is one reason why we started brewing.. that and the price gouge.
I'm here in Florida and am amazed at the selection I can get here of good craft beer.

Cheers

:welcome: The Alenders (hogie, wortly, PEIBG, etc) usually get together for a monthly tasting of various beers as well as homebrewing. The best selection of beers in the maritimes is found here in Halifax at Preimere http://premierwines.ca/store/department/23/Beer/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Lots of people making the trip pretty frequently between Hfx and PEI :cheers3:

Welcome to PEI Allie! What brings you to the Island?

There are lots of us around, brewing the hoppy west-coast IPAs I'm sure you're used to. We get together for beer tastings the 2nd Tuesday of every month so the next one will be April 9th (location TBD). Hope you can make it.

As far as brewing goes, what have you used for a system in the past? There are a couple of partial-mash brewers here, no BIAB's (brew in a bag) that I can of, and most of us have 3-vessel systems (2 kettles and a mash tun). Lots of possibilities and we'd be happy to help you get started.

Yup. Welcome to Canada. Sure we have free health care and a pretty decent and laid back quality of life, but we're taxed through the wazoo and it's harder to get some of the nicer things in life across the border at reasonable prices. Oh well. That why we DIY, right?

I moved to the island for a job. I would like to attend the beer tasting on the 9th. I unfortunately do not have much to contribute at this time. When I have the chance to start brewing myself and/or return to the states to retrieve delicious beer, I will be happy to share. I could use some recommendation on how to move from simple home brew kits to more advance systems like the 3vessel. I want to brew great beer. Hopefully you guys can help.

Prost.

I think the obk pots with jimmy's BIAB is a nice combo to start out with. There is a new shop opening soon in NS which may offer some closer options.

Welcome!
Don't worry about coming out to meetings with nothing to share. Maybe bring a snack instead, or at the very least a fun attitude to try some interesting commercial and homebrew beers. Mind you, being from SD, what's interesting to us might be old hat to you. ;)
Cheers!
I won't be able to make the meeting on the 9th, but if there's a get together the next week (Apr 15-19), count me in! I'm one of those guys who travels, so if you check the Premier link above and see something interesting, I can bring it.
