Good day all,
Was sent here by Graham (mgc). I'll most likely end up being a lurker reading the board. Also, I'm from Moncton, which is a little distance from most of you, but I might be able to trek to Sackville someday.
I don't have any background brewing being, but I'm a raging alcoholic when it comes to delicious beers (jk, I'm a pretty happy alcoholic). Anyways, I'd like to get into brewing at some point, and moreso, I'd like to start growing my own hops. First step in growing hops is acquiring some rhizomes, which is the real reason I'm joining up. I'm mostly wondering if anyone has any advice on acquiring rhizomes in the Maritimes, and recommendations on what kinds to get.
Look forward to hearing from people, and thanks for having me.

Hopefully we'll get to see you at one of the Amherst/Sackville meetings.

There's some guys here who bought some rhizomes last year. Maybe they will chime in on that purchase. I bought some from Crannog a few years back.

I bought some from
Crannog/Left Fields last year and was pretty happy with them. I didn't get much of a harvest last year, but a lot more than I expected from first year plants.

Or we'll take a road-trip for a tasting at the Laundromat.
I bought mine from Crannog a couple years ago too & plan to buy more from them this year. I've also put in an order with Seeds to Blooms (

Hey you found us, great!
I bought mine from Canadian Homebrew supplies, they are fine but I don't think I got the best deal and their a little screwy with orders lately.

That's a fine idea. We'll have to see if we can make it for a time when Patrice has some beer on tap.

Thanks for the welcome and the tips so far everyone. I can see how this community would be a popular spot for enthusiasts.
Any tips on which strains/flavors to look for. I'm pretty much sold on getting some Northern Brewers, but I'm thinking diversity is a good idea. What else?

You really can't go wrong with any of the C-hops (Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, etc.). Andy (akr71) and I have both found that Zeus (almost identical to Columbus) really love the soil in this area. My first year Zeus climbed nearly 16 feet this past summer and probably would have produced nearly a pound (dry) if it hadn't been for a wind storm that beat the main bine up pretty bad.

Funny how small a world it is—Chris pointed out that we used to live in the same dorm back in university. Glad to have another Neill alum on the boards.

Call ahead. You don't want to get there only to find all they have on tap is Pumphouse.
