Festabrew bloat

Post by kentb » Thu Jul 26, 2018 10:28 am

Hi guys, I am VERY new to home brewing. I've done 2 kits so far. Both myself and my buddy find that though they taste very good they make you quite bloated. Is this common with Festabrew kits? My next kits I plan on making my own attempt at the "Tims Dirty IPA" so I am staying away from pre made worts, I'm hoping that this time is a little more successful. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

Beer...bloats you...if you fill up like a dirigible and crash...you’re a Hindenburg! If you drink like mad and settle...well...you’re a Led Zeppelin!
At Bat: several Czech Pils
On Deck: Cream Ale
In the Hole: Kolsch
Clean Up: Tall Ships Ale clones
On tap: Propeller Pils, Festa Cream Ale

Welcome aboard!

I wonder if the bloating is from over-carbonation?

And you're in luck, the Tim from Tim's Dirty IPA is a Brewnoser, and I'm sure he'd be happy to share his original recipe with you. It will have changed slightly from his original to the current commercial version, but I'm sure it will get you very close!

Sure. I'll post it here tonight if I get a chance. Keeping in mind Jeremy and I made changes from my original batch based on what was available, and he's probably tinkered since then.

Here is the original recipe.

OG 1.069
FG 1.012

Batch Size: 19.00 l

5.70 kg Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 2 86.4 %
0.57 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 30L (30.0 SRM) Grain 3 8.6 %
0.19 kg Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 4 2.9 %
0.14 kg Wheat, Flaked (1.6 SRM) Grain 5 2.1 %

Mash 66.0 C 60 min

1.25 oz Chinook [10.00 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 6 35.1 IBUs
1.25 oz Chinook [10.00 %] - Boil 30.0 min Hop 7 27.0 IBUs
2.00 oz Citra [13.00 %] - Boil 1.0 min Hop 8 3.1 IBUs

1.0 pkg Safale American (DCL Yeast #US-05)

2.00 oz Citra [13.00 %] - Dry Hop 7.0 Days Hop 10 0.0 IBUs

In the original batch we replaced the Citra with Simcoe. There were probably some other changes I can't remember, and I'm sure it's evolved since then.

Speaking from experience of moving from Festa kits to all-grain, you might want to look into BIAB (brew in a bag) rather than full mash. For a homebrew set up you are not losing much in efficiency, it is relatively less work and is certainly a lot cheaper buying the equipment, unless you already have all the gear. I'm certainly glad I made the switch and would never go back to a Festa kit now.
