Moving to Halifax from Ottawa
Hey guys,
I'm moving to Halifax in the spring, been brewing in Ottawa for the last 8 years. Looking forward to being back east where i belong (from PEI) and meeting up with some of the locals!
Cheers!

Re: Moving to Halifax from Ottawa

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

Re: Moving to Halifax from Ottawa
Welcome! You'll want to check out our monthly meeting (every 2nd Tuesday) along with all the great beer bars in Halifax. Almost always a Brewnoser there.
We also have regular events on top of our meetings. Our largest is Hoptoberfest which in it's name is pretty self explanatory.
If you have any questions, need help, or want to offer advice feel free.
So you mentioned you been brewing for 8 years. How do you brew? What's your favorite Style? What advice would you offer to someone just starting out (We a few on here and newbies showing every few days)?
Anyways. Look forward to talking over a few cold beers.

Re: Moving to Halifax from Ottawa
Thanks Keith,
I've been brewing all grain pretty much from the go, lately been brewing English beers since I had some target, northdown and challenger to use up. I kinda over done it on big hoppy C beers and a good ESB is a nice change. Definitely will want to check out the monthly meetings and will probably have a few questions as well (mostly about where to get stuff.. supplies, CO2 refills, stuff like that.)
Hoptoberfest sounds fun. I tried checking out the pics in the gallery but it seems the links are broken.

Yea I can see getting tired of the same Hoppy C beers. But why brew the same beer or use the same hops. Always nice to experiment.MikeD wrote:Thanks Keith,

Personally I have a 5 tap setup (moving to 4), I like to keep a variety on tap, not only to keep myself interested, but have something on tap that most of my company will enjoy.
For local supplies there are a few options. Best local brewshop would be Everwoodavebrewshop in Hammonds Plains. Great Prices, Great Selection, and he's one of our own. Another option, is Noble Grape, but they are more geared towards the Beginners with Festa and Extract kits.
For CO2, Dave has a exchange program in place, and so does Noble Grape. There is also a CO2 thread stickied in the Homebrew discussion forum and 2 other options are Simplex Grinnell in Dartmouth and Don Breton's in Bayers Lake.
I will say if you stick around you will learn a lot from the club, find a place at home here, and get a great sense of community.

That's awesome, I've known about Everwood for a while. The guys from local club here in Ottawa [MOB] buy stuff from from them. It must be nice to have a decent LHBS!Keith wrote:

Yea it is. I'm looking forward to my 40 Gallon pot to arrive
Plus it's nice to pop in and pick up when you need it. Beats getting it shipped.

Re: Moving to Halifax from Ottawa
I'd love to grab a pint, I just have no idea when i can! Been busy getting a house on the market, 2 kids everyday life and wife is starting in Halifax already, i'm here with the kids until the house sells!Graham.C wrote:When are you moving? I've did the opposite trip 18months ago. Care to grab a pint and trade regional tips? I had some trouble with the MOB listserve and never really got to know the club here.
The MOB are a good bunch and there is no organization in the club. to get on the listserve, make sure you have a gmail account. Gmail does a threaded view of emails so it resembles a forum. don't mention forum or you are in for a world of hurt! Sign up here http://lists.barleyment.ca/mailman/listinfo/brewers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Some of the fun things are the BSB (Big strange brew) a member in merrickville has a huge warehouse and lot. everyone goes out to berw, drink eat and camp for the weekend. its a great opportunity to meet some members. some pics here http://www.niceguyjim.com/BSB2014/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it's usually the last week of may or first week of june.
