Hoppy Buoy. Anyone tried it? Way too harshly hopped or just me? I like me some bite, but I am not enjoying this at all. Did just have some chili, so could be the spices interacting with the hops...

I had it last night. It was good, but nothing special imo. I agree the hopping was a bit harsh, but I didn't mind

I thought it was pretty good, actually. A bit surprising because I think I've going through some IPA fatigue.

I thought they missed the mark if they were aiming for juicyness. Tasted like it needed fewer early boil hops and more late.

I'm not a fan of anything Garrison these days.

I did try the mr. robusto porter from the brew competition and I liked that but I won't give them credit for it.

I really like the robust porter, they did a great job with it. I'm also quite into the session IPA, it's great for not getting bombed. That's about it for me but I don't buy a lot of commercial beer anyway.

I had the Hoppy Buoy last weekend and don't remember much about it other than thinking, "I liked their previous IPA better," (the one they've been selling at the NSLC in six packs for the last year or so). I know I was in the minority for liking that, though

Nope. I've got your back on that one, Mumblecrunch. The Garrison IPA was one of my go to beers, second to Hop Bot most of the time.

I use an equation for picking weekend party six packs: price per ml/ABV x deliciousness. [Or: "cost per unit drunk", modified by deliciousness.] IPAs tend to win that, and Hop Bot at 7% ABV and decidedly sessionable (in term of drinkability, not booze content) won, with the Garrison IPA coming in a close second.

The Hoppy Buoy I had trouble enjoying even a bomber of. Unpleasant lingering bitterness.

Definitely on board with the harsh bitterness, not enough late additions.

I agree...........I prefer their regular IPA.

I think they were expecting the mango to replace late addition hops and it just didn't come through. The beer did have real mango in it right? The label certainly implied it.

I generally stay away from everything Garrison.

You've basically described a trip to the NSLC for me right down to the same beers. I was going to try the Hop Buoy, now I'm not so sure. Too bad Hop Bot is pretty hard to find now, I think they ran out of it around this time last year as well.

I didn't mind the Hop Buoy. It is not great but ok. I'll stick with hop yard or Mad tom form the NSLC.

I quite enjoyed Hoppy Buoy to the extent I bought a few more. Admittedly, I enjoyed their Imperial IPA quite a bit more but liked the Dirty Old Town enough to cook up a clone - haven't put it on yet though as there are a couple more projects preceding it. I wasn't a repeat offender on the Mr. Robusto though.

I thought Dirty Old Town was just a rebadge of Black IPA - which itself was a blend of Imperial IPA and Martello Stout. If so, how would you clone that? Mind you, the description on Dirty Old Town suggests it's not a blend any more, so perhaps easier to accomplish.

ivorm: To the best of my knowledge Hop Bot has been discontinued. We ran out awhile ago in Sydney, but I bought a bunch on sale in Antigonish and Truro ona recent road trip. Was a steal at $12.50 a sixer.

Has it been discontinued? The same thing happened last year, it went away for a few months at the NSLC then it came back and you could tell is was really fresh since the hop flavor was really strong. Hopefully it comes back again soon, there hasn't been any stock at my local NSLC for a while.

Had the Hoppy buoy yesterday with supper. Aromas and flavors were nice but there was a lingering bitterness with it. Maybe that'll not show up after they do it again and get the recipe dialed in? Hope so, I enjoyed it none the less.

According to one of the brewers I asked after judging the comp this year, it's not longer a blend. Tastes like the same beer to me going off memory, but I could be wrong in calling them out on that!

To clone (or make something similar) brew an overly roasty black IPA! Or, blend an IPA with some american or robust stout to your taste.

I bought up quite a bit of the Hop Bot when it was on clearance, unfortunately it is all gone. Haven't seen any in my local NSLC's in a bit. I liked it, hopefully it will show up again.

Well, the ingredients are at Everwood Dave's for his Black IPA...the ABV is listed as 6.5% and the hops are all listed. So I'll start with that and should be able to bang out a reasonable facsimile.
