As part of a project funded by Agriculture Canada, we are trying to identify the location of wild or feral hops around the Maritimes. We are collecting living material, recording the location of the accession, and bringing it back to the lab to clean it up and put it under clean culture.

We are interested in collecting material in order to identify novel traits for disease resistance as well as unique flavor and aroma compounds.

If you know of some wild or feral plants growing in the woods or at the back of your property and you are interested in helping out, fire me a pm and I can fill you in on the rest of the details of the project.

Thanks for the help folks. Some great leads already. We actually have 3 sites where the plants have been there for almost 200 years! Please keep them coming if you know of any wild or feral hops locations.

I know a spot in Chester -quite a drive!

Starting at Hr Main on the main rd and going toward Avondale, as you go past the post office you will see a large plant growing up a pole on the left, and another on a pole on the right 1/2 way up the hill. Past that about 100 meters up on the Avondale Access rd you will see one on a guide wire on a pole on the right.
Going into Conception Hr. turn to go out the harbour and after the first few houses you will see one growing up a tree on the water side long before the wreck.
Further up the main Rd in Con. Hr. turn in off by the old store onto what I think it is called Gully Rd. you will come to a fork in the lane and you will see quite a mess of plants growing into the evergreen trees.

All around the area there are hop plants which AFAIK came from John Guys settlement in the 1600's

My aunt mentioned seeing them in past years around Benacadie Pond in Cape Breton. She said she hadn't seen any this year but wasn't exactly looking for them.

I just harvested my cascade plants yesterday and I am flying to Gander today. Too bad I didn't see this earlier, or i would have brought some.
