Beer Menu

Heading to Edmonton for a few days for work. Just checked the beer menu at one of the hotel restaurants ...

Micro-Brews 4.75
Alley Kat Apricot · Alexander Keith's IPA
Rickard's Red · Rickard's White

When did Keith's and Rickard's become "Micro Brews"?

Rickards was on the "micro" list when I was in Niagara Falls last spring too...

Tell the server the truth about those fake brands.

Where abouts are you staying in Edmonton? There's a few good beer spots downtown now along with Hog's Head Brewing in St. Albert, if you're mobile.

I'm at the Marriot At River Cree, fly in, spend 5 hours at the plant to watch testing and fly back out. 2 days travel for 5 hours work.

I saw someone call out the Air Canada Centre recently for their "Craft" beer selection. All Molson owned - Creemore, Granville Island, and Mad & Noisy.

It's important to define what you mean by "Craft Beer" at that point, because IIRC those breweries brew small batches and operate similarly to any other small business microbrewery. Molson just happens to be majority shareholder. The other definition includes that the brewery must not have majority share owned by a larger corporation.

Yeah, same parent company, now, I think. Creemore isn't a *huge* brewery. Mad & Noisy is a branch off from Creemore (the Mad and Noisy rivers intersect in or near Creemore, thus the name, which is kinda neat). The Mad & Noisy product line has more of a Craft beer feel/appeal. I'd be happier to see all those on a craft/micro list that Keith's and Rickard's, personally.

I think the only reasonable argument against considering those breweries to be "Craft" is whether or not the parent company can influence the quality of the beer and the creative freedom of the brewers. I don't think it's fair to assume that in all cases.

The pricks totally sold out, though!

IMO,Creemore isn't as good since Molson bought them.
