Top 20 Great Canadian Beers

Post by akr71 » Fri Jun 14, 2013 1:40 pm

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/06/13 ... 17205.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

20 beers from 20 different styles, an interesting list - I don't agree with all their choices, but it looks like they are trying to put together a worthy list.
It's no simple stereotype that Canadians love their beer. Beer is this country's most popular alcoholic drink, and craft beer in particular is having a renaissance in Canada. Even as our per capita beer consumption drops, sales and consumption of craft beers keeps rising.

Overall beer sales have been flat across Canada since 1995, but craft beer sales have revenue growth at or near double digits, and have since 2009, according to a 2012 report from BMO Nesbitt Burns.

Breweries across the country are producing dozens of excellent beers that range from traditional to inventive, and to help meet the increased demand, Niagara College now has a post-secondary brewmaster program, with Canada's first teaching brewery.

Beer: Imperial I.P.A

Brewery: Garrison Brewing Company

Toronto: Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Type: Copper coloured and fruity, these beers are originally from England.

The Brew: Garrison bills this as "the hoppiest beer in Atlantic Canada." Depending on your taste for hops, that either sounds great or awful. If you're a hophead, this is your brew
Really?

I would agree that it's the hoppiest commercially available beer at NSLC in AC
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

NSLC, yes. In Atlantic Canada, no.

What's hoppier?

Well. Propeller IIPA is rated @ 85 IBU and the Garrison is 81.

But my point was that Nash definitely has the hoppiest commercially available beer that is produced in Atlantic Canada - it's just not available at the NSLC.

I could be wrong but these lists usually look at year round stuff not seasonal brews like Prop IIPA. We all know Nash makes the hoppiest beers but again this list is probably only looking at product availabilty in local LC's. They would probably view RB and HT as brewpubs not breweries, since no bottled product are available.

I completely agree, but for them to say it's the hoppiest beer in Atlantic Canada is a lie.

That's true. Awful. And completely inline with so many instances of this same sort of shit over the years from that place.

IBUs have nothing to do with how hoppy beer is. Also, last I checked these breweries' IBU numbers are guesstimates, not analytical.

I understand that, but what type of information can one pull on to actually determine the hoppiest beer?

I'm guessing when Garrison says it's the hoppiest beer, they are referring to the IBU (though I could be wrong). If they are using IBU, Propeller is still "hoppier", if they aren't using IBU as a gauge, then how are they measuring it's "hoppiness"?

My whole point was it's not the hoppiest beer in Atlantic Canada. That's it.

If you want to get into grammar, the hoppiest beers in AC could mean just about anything in a growler or sold at Premiere AFAIAC.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

I'm gonna go ahead and assume it's by how many hops they put in. That's what they said isn't it? Yup. They didn't say anything about the most bitter beer, or the highest IBU level.

Good for you

My whole point is that IBUs have almost nothing to do with how hoppy a beer is when referring to NA IPAs.

Yes, but that's too subjective unless it's blatently obvious that the beer is hoppier.

That's fine, if they compared their hop additions to that of the other breweries.

They must be comparing recipes, otherwise the statement would be nothing but BS
