I found out from the brewery manager that they use corn syrup, instead of flaked corn or dextrose

Re: Alexander Keiths Cascade Hop Ale
Regarding there being no market for this, I have to disagree (at least in theory). Almost no one starts on craft beer. The first beers people consume are mass marketed beers. So, every new craft beer drinker (and they are the only growth area of the beer market) is a consumer lost to the big breweries. If they could offer a product that would satisfy an evolving palette, while at the same time allowing brand familiarity/loyalty, they might stop some of the slow bleed of drinkers. Is that demographic large enough to justify making a product like this? I don't know. But I suspect that is the sort of thing they are trying to do (rather than capture craft drinkers).

I agree that there is a market for this - my point was simply that it's more of an "inbetween" beer and not something that you will continue to sell to the same individuals as you would with a true craft beer, or a mass produced beer. People are going to try it, and if they like it, they will most likely progress to true craft beer and not stick with the craft beer imitations by the large breweries. If they don't like it, they will revert back to their yellow fizz.jason.loxton wrote:Regarding there being no market for this, I have to disagree (at least in theory). Re: Alexander Keiths Cascade Hop Ale
I think what it boils down to for big beers is $$$. If the majority of their target market like it... Why change it? Let's face it... the Keith's "brand" sells! And for what it is, it isn't THAT bad. If I were offered one, I'd drink it. I may not walk away saying "Man, that was great!", but I wouldn't turn it down. There are worst out there.
It costs money to brew beer. If it doesn't sell well, it is a waste to them. It seems to me that it is easier for them to buy out another successful brewery to target another slice of the market, than it is to come up with something themselves via trial and error.
My biggest issue with keith's is that no matter what they call it (red, white, IPA), it still tastes like keith's - same body, and same base flavor. Any craft brewery I go to, EVERY beer is different in its own unique way.

We know Keiths is really InBev, but many do not so to them it still appears like its craft because it doesn't say Molson or Labatt (or BMC). Same with Rickard's

Apparently the Cascade Hop Ale is now available around town. Not sure about NSLC availability but I hear the Red Stag has it. Anybody try it yet?

I had a taste of the "hallertau" brew the other day.....and after one sip handed the inbev rep a citra smash.... with requests for more.....although it was described as "astringent, but in a good way" lol
If its bitter in ANY way it must be astringent, right?
Dont know flavor when it smacks em in the face.

That saves a lot of man hours. No wonder they laid off all those employees last year.

I tried the Cascade in Barrie, Ontario while I was there. It wasn't the best beer I've ever had, but its a big step in the right direction compared to their "IPA".

Not really. Bitterness & astringency are highly correlated but not equivalent.Stusbrews wrote:If its bitter in ANY way it must be astringent, right?
