Spent Grain Uses?

Post by BJBrewhaus » Wed Jan 24, 2024 6:30 pm

I've been chucking my spent grain in the green bin but I'd love to find some uses for it. I've made pancakes with mild success but I'd love to find a recipes for other good uses, bread, cookies, or even a farm that takes it for livestock.

All my spent grain goes to a local farmer. It helps that I work for a feed company and get my eggs from the same guy though I guess lol. I reckon most farmers would gladly take your spent grain, especially the ones with smaller operations.

Where are you located, which farm? I'd be more than happy to take it to them if they're not too far.

I'm in Truro. I'm not sure of the farm name, just the owner (Mike) who used to work for the same company as me, Clarence Farm Services. I just bring the spent grain into the store here is Truro and he grabs it when he's passing.

I'm a big noob here, do you bring a container of soaked grains or dry them out first?

I feed mine to my hens immediately after use. Keep in mind they start to stink after a few days so you don't want them sitting around. You could just throw them in the woods for birds/squirrels/mice/raccoons etc - they'll eat them.
Primary - Best Bitter
Secondary - Standard Bitter
On tap - Golden Ale, Standard Bitter, Blonde, Best Bitter, Premium Bitter, Porter

Made dog treats with spent grains. She sure loves them. Saved 4 cups in the freezer.

I've done bagels and bread with spent grain in the past. They've always come out well. Just usually ends up in the compost pile these days
On tap: Hopped Mead, ESB, Schwazbier
Coming up: Altbier
Fermenting: Maibock
Planned: NEIPA, NZ Pils, Oyster Stout

I just dump them in an old brew bucket or similar container. I do brew in a bag and tend to squeeze out as much wort as possible first but don't dry out the grains. Brew bucket works well because the lid keeps the stink in!
