Not much effort to let anyone know this was going on, and poorly timed with Great Canadian Beer Fest happening out west, but it happened tonight. I only saw the second half of the individual categories, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary aside from a lack of Nash beers in the IPA categories - did you pass this year Greg or is the Ontario BJCP palate still skewing those results? But whatever happened in the first half gave Picaroons Brewery of the Year. It had to have been the first half of the categories because the only thing they won while I was watching was a gold for Timberhog Stout in the Stout category and bronze in English-style IPA for Yippee IPA. Locally I also saw a few bronze medals for Garrison for Fog Burner (American Barley Wine), Glenora Fog Burner (Barrel Aged Strong Ale), and Nit Wit (Belgian Specialty/Wheat or something like that).

Haven't had a lot of the other winners, but Black Oak 10 Bitter Years won gold for IIPA. I had this at a double IPA contest a year ago, tasted blind against 7 other double IPAs. It scored the highest across all tasters that day, but I didn't think it was that great. Muskoka Mad Tom IPA won silver for best American IPA behind one from Driftwood in BC that also took home beer of the year.

I see Gahan won for "Wheat Beer – North American Style" with their Sir John A Honey Wheat. Hunh. Whattaya know?

Some interesting stuff there. What is with the barrel aged stuff? Why does the sour beer have to be barrel aged? I still don't understand why there is a kellerbier category. Pumpkin, and fruit, and fruit wheat - is all that necessary? Having had the Mad Tom and Crazy Canuck, I think they were reasonable choices for awards, I would buy them again. Rickard's Blonde gets silver in the pilsner? That's a thin crowd. But the one that really sticks out to me is the Garrison bronze for their witbier in French and Belgian Saison category- not the witbier category.

And I guess Picaroon's will be removing the comment on their website regarding their low opinion of awards and why they don't enter competitions....

Yeah some of the awards and categories make you say 'huh?' But that isn't really a change, except for the large increase in caregories this year.

Bruce entered 9 of my best beers - Hop Mess Monster, Commissar, Citra Nation, Immaculate Concoction, Preacher Man etc

Next year instead of wasting all that good beer I'll be calling you all over for a huge tasting

Picaroons takes top brewery award

Fredericton-based microbrewery Picaroons was named the Brewery of the Year at the Canadian Brewing Awards in Toronto on Sunday.

The brewery also won gold medals for its Timber Hog Stout and Best Bitter beers.

Sean Dunbar, the owner of Picaroons, said he is still trying to figure out what the win will mean to his business, but he said the company will likely expand.

"We have a responsibility to step up and run with that and show the rest of Canada a bit of what we can do out here, so we'll have to find a way to step up,” Dunbar said.

Picaroons won five awards, including the title of Canadian brewery of the year.

Dunbar said the award for Best Bitter was sentimental.

“Best bitter is our best seller in New Brunswick year-round,” he said.

“It's always been our key beer and it's really nice to win an award for that beer because it is the epitome of British-style ale.”

Picaroons has been extremely successful in recent years and at one point, the microbrewery was facing a beer shortage.

In 2010, Dunbar said Picaroons was having a difficult time keeping up with the demand for its product.

The microbrewery had to cut back on eight of its 11 brands that summer.

Dunbar said more than 80 breweries from across the country took part in the Canadian Brewing Awards competition.

Moncton's Pump House won silver for its Fire Chief Red Ale and bronze for its Thai Wheat Scotch Ale.

And, Saint John's Moosehead Breweries won gold for its lager and silver medals for Moose Light and Moosehead Pale Ale.
