Am I naive in hoping that one change will be that I won't have to drop off my growler at Rockbottom a day ahead of time anymore??

I'm all for that. :rockin: Right now I'd have to drop my growler off about a month in advance in order to get it filled for a pick up lol.

That's fantastic news for you guys in NS! That whole 24 hour in advance notice was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Good to hear it's changed!

To be clear:
The 24 hour advanced notice wasn't the law, it was Nash not wanting to fill growlers that wouldn't be purchased that or the next day, thus shortening their lifetime significantly.
I don't think it is a bad policy, the beer is best drunk fresh and close to the source, but it would have made pop-bys difficult.

Rogues Roost pre-filled growlers, so it is (was?) easier to walk in and get what you wanted (assuming they hadn't sold out for the day).

Now they can be filled and sold over the bar at any time. That will simplify the whole process?

At Paddys, you had to pay at the bar and leave the pub, walk around the back of the building, bang on the kitchen door, give the kitchen staff your receipt, they took the receipt, closed the door on you, and you waited outside until they returned with your growler. If you had empties, you returned them at the bar, an not the kitchen door.

Yes, it's that, as I stated here many times, and....

We're a tiny brewery and don't want to start a bottle washing business aka growler-washing business, we have no space, appropriate area or equipment to wash growlers efficiently. In other words, we didn't want to develop a big growler trade-in business leaving us with all those growlers to wash, especially knowing the day would come when we'd be permitted to fill on demand. Starting next week or the week after folks will be expected to arrive with clean growlers for a refill from the tap. :cheers2:

My mistake. For some reason, I thought that it wasn't legally possible to show up with a growler anywhere in NS unless you arranged it 24 hours in advance. I guess that I confused it with what some others were telling me.

Will the H&T be considering implementing this as well?

If I had to do that at my local brewery here in Ptbo, I would of said "forget it". I'll try my hand on a clone of it.

Would that be the Old Stone or is there another brewery in Peterborough? I haven't tried their beer for a few years. How is it? My wife is from Bobcaygeon so we're up that way a lot.

They can fill them any time between when the bar opens and 10pm, not after. As soon as it's filled you have to pay and leave. I don't think many people will have issues with those elements of the rules. This is a huge step forward!
Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.

You used to be able to get growlers at rogue's until midnight (unless they ran out). Not 100% good changes.

Is there anything else in there?

What is the point of pay and leave immediately? Do I have to go immediately home as well? Or somebody else's home? Maybe an empty green bin, or if lucky, a fresh dumpster. Improvements for sure, but still hanging on to our whacked out past until the bitter end.

I actually wrote down a quote from a guy in Budapest, they recently passed a law banning the sale of alcohol after 10pm..

"those who still sell beer after 10 oclock, they fight oppression... Dictatorship! These stupid rules are made 30 men sitting in a room, elected by pensioners who dont know any better. Last week I went in one 24 hour store, to buy beer, and they wouldn't sell me any! I ask them why, they say they obey the law. Now they are closed. That shows them. "

That hasn't changed, we've always only been permitted to sell until 10 pm, "regular nslc outlet hours", so I was told way back.

Lolololololololo

You don't specifically need to pay and leave but you're not allowed to have them (or any other booze from a retail outlet) at your table / side, that's been the rule forever although never really enforced.

Beer to go gets easier in N.S.

Members of Nova Scotia’s fledgling brew pub and microbrewery industries cheered Wednesday after the province tweaked regulations on takeout sales of growlers.

Craft brew lovers will now be able to purchase their growlers — typically 1.5- and two-litre jugs — from their favourite brew pub right at the bar, instead of at a separate space within the establishment.

“We’re not going to be selling thousands of growlers per year or anything, but the change will generate some extra business and we think it will be a wonderful marketing tool,” Bruce Keith, owner of the Hart & Thistle Gastropub and Brewery in Halifax, said in an interview.

Keith said he timed the launch of the take-home growler side of his business to coincide with the change in regulations Wednesday.

His business is situated at the Historic Properties Harbourside Market Building, next to the Halifax ferry terminal.

“We view this as an added service for the customer here for lunch or dinner after work who would like to bring home a souvenir,” Keith said.

The previous regulations made it too complicated and costly to offer take-home growlers, he said.

The regulatory changes will allow brew pub and mircobrewery operators across the province to sell in-house brew right in the pub, instead of from a segregated storefront for take-home sales.

The changes were introduced by Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Mark Furey.

“It’s about convenience and making it easier for microbreweries to do business,” Furey said.

Sales for off-site consumption will not be permitted after 10 p.m., and patrons must immediately leave the premises with the sealed growler.

“It is a little bit of an economic boost for the communities where brew pubs are operating,” said Kevin Keefe in an interview.

He owns Granite Brewery Ltd. in Halifax and is president of the Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia.

Keefe said the craft brewing industry is enjoying growth of between 10 and 15 per cent annually and employs several hundred people around the province.

“The industry is in growth mode but still accounts for only about two per cent of the Nova Scotia brew market,” he said.

Granite Brewery currently consists of a microbrewery on Stairs Street in Halifax and a popular brew pub in Toronto at the busy intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Mount Pleasant Road.

Keefe started Granite in 1985 and is well known in craft brewing circles for introducing the Peculiar Ale brand to the province.
