Re: Beer in the news
I got serious looks from a couple guys today when I mentioned it.
On another note, I could have sworn I heard a radio ad on the way in about some kind of winter craft beer event at jack astors maybe....?

you sir are not crazy. I was there today and they are pushing some craft beer as part as their current menu. I had a hunky dory pale ale, which was a nice change of pace up there.mr x wrote:I got serious looks from a couple guys today when I mentioned it.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I believe Uncle Leo's is on tap at The Dock in New Glasgow now. Not sure what they took off. Red only though.

I'll assume this was in response to my "Are you moving to Alberta" question.. if so, seriously, you work 2 weeks on in the field, 1 week off in the brewery.. perfect! The weather is great 'most' of the time (frickin' cold right now, don't look at the forecast.. ha)mr x wrote:I got serious looks from a couple guys today when I mentioned it.

No, the response was to opening a brewery in Alberta, from the guys who just came back. Lots of disposable income there. Huge potential if the laws are truly opened up. HUGE.

There's a profile of HPHunter in today's AllNS. Nothing regular readers over here would be surprised about.

N.S. to fund research into uses of farm’s product
Evan Price has an extra hop in his step these days.
The hop master turns 30 this week, and on Tuesday his FiddleHop Farms was recognized at the legislature as one of 51 small businesses from across the province that will receive vouchers for professional support and advice from Nova Scotia universities and colleges.
The province’s Productivity and Innovation Voucher Program provides services from academic experts in areas such as applied research, engineering services, field testing, prototypying, product design and feasibility studies.
In Price’s case, the research is on the hops side of the farm that produces a key ingredient for Garrison Breweries’ beer-making efforts in Halifax, along with harvesting a bountiful crop of fiddleheads.
“They grow kind of like string beans except that the vines get to be 16 or 17 feet tall,” Price said of the hops that consume about two hectares of land on the Glenholme farm. The vines attach themselves to a piece of string, tied to a trellis. They are grown from the end of March until the end of the summer, then cut down.
But Price wonders whether there might be other uses for the hops or for the green matter that organically supports the hops while they are growing.
“The hops, they are used in the beer. The green matter is composted, shredded or burned.”
David Morgan, a chemistry professor at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, is the man who will provide the academic expertise that could answer Price’s question.
Morgan will use one of the government’s 41 first-time vouchers, worth $15,000 apiece, to conduct his research. Ten businesses are getting vouchers of up to $25,000 to help build on work from a previous voucher.
“Briefly, we are looking at the potential antimicrobial screens,” Morgan said. “We may be looking at some secondary flavouring components. We are looking at the flowers principally and potentially the rhizomes (roots). We do some extraction chemistry on them and then those samples go directly into an antimicrobial assay (experiment).”
Morgan said he and a student will do the the research but how their findings are applied depends on Price.
“There is a possibility of finding other markets for the products,” Morgan said. “That’s certainly Evan’s side of the house. The intellectual property goes to the company.”
Morgan and his assistant must complete the voucher project by the beginning of March.
If the research proves successful, Price could find himself in line to reapply in the second stage, for a $25,000 voucher.
Price, a commerce graduate of Dalhousie University, runs the business with contributions from his brother Aaron, who handles labour management, and Tom Bowers, who provides the land and machinery.
He says FiddleHop Farms does not get any money directly from the voucher program.
“What we benefit from is and the foresight of the government here is to invest in the research to see if there is something else we can do with our product. They sponsor the research.
“It’s great. We had a lot of people who helped contribute for us to reach the point where some students can do studies.”
Michel Samson, the economic and rural development minister, lauded the voucher program at Tuesday’s announcement.
“With these vouchers, 51 small businesses from across Nova Scotia will benefit from the wealth of expertise available at our universities and colleges,” Samson said in a release. “These businesses are great examples of the entrepreneurial spirit that exists within our province, and I am pleased we can support them.”
More than 240 businesses have received vouchers since the program started in 2008.

I like the sound of this program but find it curious a long-time Liberal volunteer was singled out as the person they're promoting.Jimmy wrote:Hop harvester gets head start on idea

I'm not after hearing the pitch from the Liberal MLA in Shelley's riding before he got elected. Pretty much wanted to drive a Brinks truck up to the universities.

If he's such a "hop master", wouldn't he know hops grow in bines, not vines?

Craft beer outlet taps into horror flick
Hell Bay Brewing Company, a small, locally owned craft beer brewery based in Liverpool, posted a note to its Facebook page.
“Look out for Hell Bay Brewing Company in Kevin Smith’s new horror film TUSK. We are the feature beer in the pub scene.”
Written and directed by Smith (Clerks), the film stars Genesis Rodriguez, Haley Joel Osment, and Justin Long, among others.
“When his best friend and podcast co-host goes missing in the backwoods of Canada, a young guy joins forces with his friend’s girlfriend to search for him,” says IMDB.com
There will be a midnight screening of the first trailer at the Sundance Film Festival in January, says the Hollywood News.
“According to Smith’s blog, TUSK’s filming and editing is mainly wrapped up – apart from a few extra scenes featuring a mystery actor who isn’t available till December or January,” says Claire Joanne Huxam in http://www.thehollywoodnews.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Schoolhouse Gluten-Free Gourmet is looking to branch out into beer (AllNS BizBytes). I imagine Cameron will have something to say to that...
