The other 2 beers turned out very well and I think they make a great addition to the local market since they are both unique. They just missed the mark on this DIPA, I believe there is a good beer lurking in there somewhere but they missed it this time around. Hopefully they will correct it asap.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Only tried the Hunky Dory so far. I was pretty impressed, but also not wowed. That just means it didn't do it 100% for me personally, not that there's anything wrong with the beer. I am glad to have another option out there though. The green tea was lost to me and the citrus, while there, wasn't obviously distinguishable from the C hops (there is supposed to be peel in there). Both my girlfriend and I thought that the lingering malt profile was a bit stronger than we'd have liked (Jillian refers to any beer that offends her like this as a "spaghetti beer"). The bitterness was also a touch harsh (perhaps from the citrus peel?). I would have preferred a slightly cleaner beer or a bit more caramel to round things out. But, then it would not have been the beer they wanted. This beer might well be someone's favourite beer, it just wasn't mine. It IS tasty though. And it's great to see another production oriented micro!

Had a nice visit with Emily at Boxing Rock yesterday and went back this am to get more beer - they were bottling Hunky Dory, as they had run out. Like the other new micros, they can't make enough beer for everyone who wants it. It was really great to drink Hunky Dory down on the waterfront patio at the Seadog pub. Shelburne is very nice! I had the DIPA again and talked to Emily about it. Of course she has (seen?) heard the feedback. Not sure what exactly they may be doing different, as it is Henry's brew.

I don't know if it is Boxing Rock's popularity or the Shelburne tourism movement, but my little post about visiting Boxing Rock and other places in Shelburne was by far my most popular FB post ever on my work site here https://www.facebook.com/Craig.Pinhey.FrogsPad" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I was quite surprised.

Gavin and I had a 6-pack of the Pale Ale and 2 bottle were complete diacetyl bombs, yet the remaining 4 were great. Very strange. I enjoyed the 4 good bottles quite a bit. I like the odd ingredient additions. Subtle enough that you might think those flavours come just from the hops, but once you know they're there I think I can pick them out.

Have a bottle of the IIPA in the fridge waiting to be cracked, though sounds like the reviews aren't great haha.

I've only had the Hunky Dory and had no diacetyl problems.
It was a good beer and like Jayme, and I thought the ingredients worked. Though I can't help thinking that they're added for more of a 'boutique' product effect. The green tea is subtle enough that if probably wouldn't be picked up by most drinkers and the citrus flavor would be easier to add (IMO) with hops.

Would I buy it again? Yes

I spoke to Emily from Boxing Rock about the DIPA sweetness, as I am reviewing it for the next TAPS, and she let me know that their most recent batch finished with a lower gravity, and is more along the lines of what they intended. I am looking forward to trying it, and hearing from you guys about how it came out.

Good. I'll try it again when I know I'm getting it from a fresher batch.

Just tried one as well. Very nice. Has much more hop aroma and flavour, bitterness is appropriate, and it finishes dry. I bought two bottles and will buy more.

Exciting times. Must not be easy to launch a new brewery. Great to have a supportive and knowledgable beer community to help out. It's always a work in progress so I'm sure things will improve. Way to go.

I had a bottle of the DIPA on Thursday and it was a giant leap from the previous one. I wouldn't call it my go-to, but if they can at least repeat that performance I'd be willing to order it.
Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.

Found the Hunky Dory last night in Yarmouth at Dooly's. As I ordered it a woman sitting at the bar with a Coors Light started yelling at me about how gross Boxing Rock was. lol. I didn't take her advice. Well done although I think the honey and green tea are kinda lost in all the hops so why bother. It's a good beer but not something I would drink a lot of. Business wise I think they should have made something a little more approachable for the crazy lady at the bar. It is just too much of a jump for a Coors drinker. I wish them well and I was very happy to find local craft beer in a pool hall.

lmfao, I'll be surprised if a Dooly's can hang onto a craft beer....

I picked up a bomber of the double IPA in Yarmouth this morning. Going to give that a try tonight with a couple friends. They even had the 640ml bombers of DIPA at Dooly's but I wasn't tackling that on my own at 2AM. Haha

Totally agree. First second of the first sip I was thinking DFH 90 min territory but that hope quickly faded. :( Great things take time tho and I'll be following this beer for sure.

They had the Boxing Rock Red Ale on tap at Haley's Lounge (Rodd Hotel) in Yarmouth a few weeks ago when I was there. The little old lady bartender tells me it is shit while she is pouring it for me and claims she will give me a free Rickard's Red on tap if I don't like it.......which made me smile. However I have to ask, why not go to Rudder's for a beer over Dooly's while staying in beautiful Yarmouth?

Perhaps the issue is that you were drinking it upside-down?

Was the beer OK? Maybe it was off, although it's more likely that the people in Yarmouth are off, lol....

I question taps and lines at most of "those" places.

The beer was fine and I ordered several, I told her that it was the only beer in the place worth drinking (they only have Richards Red/White, Molson and Coor's on tap), she laughed and said something like ...."Yeah,I don't drink beer but the regulars are telling me it is crap." So yes X, the regulars in Yarmouth that frequently a dive hotel bar are definitely off as the beer was quite tasty.

Oh I usually do go to Rudders but I was at the Rodd for a concert and it was way after closing time for Rudders. It drives me nuts when servers don't know anything about what they are selling. I think Boxing Rock should make a beer the local Coors drinkers can relate to. There are educated beer drinkers in Yarmouth or else Rudders would never have survived as long as it has, but if BR wants to appeal to the masses (Dooly's and Hotels) then they need a craft gateway beer.

I'm not so sure that I agree with that. Perhaps BR doesn't have any interest in appealing to the masses. I know that I certainly don't when I'm up and running. IMHO, that's what distinguishes craft beers from others like Coors Light.
