Congrats John. I think that calls for a growler of something local!

Re: What's everyone drinking tonight?
Kathleen say's that's HUGE, I put that in upper case because she yelled "that's huge" a few times, she's been through it. I had to ask her because I haven't done that (her thesis was on ubiquinone LOL). What was the thesis on?
Congratulations.

ps. tell me it was beer related

Thanks guys. It was huge for me - I did it part time while working full time and so it took me nearly a decade, although the writeup was mostly in 2014.

John and Jon will have to tell us all about lobsters over a beer some time.

Re: What's everyone drinking tonight?
I went to Halifax today and got a six pack of this at Premiere ($20). Thanks for the tip off. I'm not a big fan but Kathleen really likes it, so she can have the rest of them, although I might have another just to learn how a good ESB tastes.IanWatson wrote:I'm not big on bitterness, so I'm really loving Red Racer's ESB. It's big on hop aromatics without the bitterness. You can get it at Bishop's Cellar and Premiere.
I figure every time I go to Halifax I'll pick up another beer from the favorite commercial beer thread and learn em. Like Sandy says, he's dedicating the new year to research.

Found this gem during my last trip to Montreal, not familiar with the brewery but it is a tasty Flanders Red.

Re: What's everyone drinking tonight?
Another interesting sour from an unknown Quebec brewery (unknown to me), dangerous easy drinking and crisp for an 8% ABV beer.

I just had a Duchesse De Bourgogne and it blew my mind. I haven't had much exposure to sours but I think I'm going to seek them out more often. I see a dusty, infected carboy of deliciousness in my future.

Drinking a fly time IPA from Propeller. Glad I only grabbed 1 liter. Not sure I'd want anymore than that.

That's right. Still think it's their best hoppy beer I've ever had, but it needs to finish dryer.Keith wrote:Drinking a fly time IPA from Propeller. Glad I only grabbed 1 liter. Not sure I'd want anymore than that.

I found it plenty dry. Just a harsh bitterness I didn't really love.
those hops would have been better used on a later addition.

Finally! "Better late than never" makes sense. Never could get to grips with that one. Perhaps that phrase should be re-written "better late than ever."Keith wrote:I found it plenty dry. Just a harsh bitterness I didn't really love.

I'm enjoying few Galaxy SMASH IPAs and brewing up a Smoked Porter. Smells Amazing! Better than amazing actually. Really can't believe this beer isn't more popular.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

What did you find wrong with it? He said too sweet, I said too bitter.LiverDance wrote: Shit we must have got a bad growler cause Chris and I ended up drain pouring ours. It was pretty bad.

Re: What's everyone drinking tonight?
Didn't meld well. Green hops and almost cleaner flavour, very bitter.
