Re: What the fuck is a growler?
Well, I have Greg's ss one. There are issues, but they may be related to a manufacturing defect in this one. There is a gouge out of the lip. This might require extra force to crank the lid down, which might make for the extra force required to open it, like channellock force. This is compounded by the seal material, which is rubber. It makes an incredible friction fit when cranked down onto. A bit of lube fixed that for the most part, but that's another issue, albeit it might be a very small one. The lack of a handle is a bit of a nuisance, I think I may try to silver solder onto it. Might work, might explode.NASH wrote:I don't think there's any hope for these to be honest.

Re: What the fuck is a growler?
I think I would chalk it up to a defect in that particular growler.
I was just in Oregon for 2 weeks, and found a couple of places that use the stainless growlers. There's one brewery, Seven Brides Brewing (http://www.sevenbridesbrewing.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), that uses them exclusively as their "house growler". They sell them for $30 (+ beer cost) and can't keep 'em on the shelf. They were sold out when I was there. They report no issues at all.
The other place that I found was Bailey's Taproom (http://www.baileystaproom.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), which sold a bunch of different sizes of the stainless double-walled bottles from the same manufacturer. I picked up a couple more of the 64oz'ers for $22/each. They also sell a lot of them, and have had no issues. They will fill growlers with just about any of their draft beer. Side note.. check out their rotating draft list: http://www.baileystaproom.com/?page_id=8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .
The amazon reviews are pretty positive too.

Amazon.ca has 6 more white ones in stock on sale for $31, shipping included.

I gotta think there are some stainless steel growlers are work out there... I've had good luck with Kleen Kanteens! I've just got a 1L, 500mL and 250mL ones, but I see they make a 64oz one now. Expensive as fuck however.

Re: What the fuck is a growler?
Some stainless steel growlers are insulated and will keep things cold MUCH longer, weigh less, and won't break. Well worth the price if you're going take advantage of the features. I believe we are all very familiar with typical glass growlers and more than likely own several (I know I do).

Re: What the fuck is a growler?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_bottle#Growler
Note the line I made bold - AFAIC, if the bottle doesn't leak and growl at you, it's NOT A FUCKING GROWLER!! hahaGrowler:
A growler is a glass or ceramic jug used to transport draft beer in Australia, the United States and Canada. They are commonly sold at breweries and brewpubs as a means to sell take-out craft beer. The exploding growth of craft breweries and the growing popularity of home brewing has also led to an emerging market for the sale of collectible growlers.
Growlers are generally made of glass and have either a screw-on cap or a hinged porcelain gasket cap, which can provide freshness for a week or more. A properly sealed growler will hold carbonation indefinitely and will store beer like any other sanitized bottle. Some growler caps are equipped with valves to allow replacement of CO2 lost while racking. The modern glass growler was first introduced by Charlie and Ernie Otto of Otto Brother's Brewing Company in 1989.[4]
While 64 U.S. fl oz is the most popular growler size, growlers are commonly found in 32 U.S. fl oz, 128 U.S. fl oz, 1-litre (33.8 U.S. fl oz; 35.2 imp fl oz), and 2-liter sizes as well. The two most popular colors for growlers are amber (a brownish hue) or clear (often referred to as "flint"). Clear growlers are often 25% - 35% cheaper per unit than their amber counterparts. Glass handles are the most common type of handle for growlers, although metal handles (with more ornate designs) can also be found. Some growlers do not have handles – this is especially common with growlers smaller than 64 U.S. fl oz that have Grolsch-style flip-tops.[5]
The term likely dates back to the late 19th century when fresh beer was carried from the local pub to one's home by means of a small galvanized pail. It is claimed the sound that the CO2 made when it escaped from the lid as the beer sloshed around sounded like a growl.[6]
Growlers can usually be refilled for between $5 and $15 in America, but carry a significant (sometimes non-compulsory) deposit.

Re: What the fuck is a growler?
The hilarity of the term "growler" isn't just from any size bottle, bucket, pail or barrel being pegged as one. It's the NSLCs definition of a growler; a 1.8-2.0 L glass vessel. In this Province, if it doesn't match that descriptor it's not a growler. Least ways not a growler that's up to code. I called NSLC Headquaters with a few questions last year, they were well-versed about the specifics of a "growler"jherbin wrote:Now I'm totally stumped!

Re: What the fuck is a growler?
Keep in mind the doc posted by Nash is for Brewpubs, not breweries, though it implies the NSLC as a whole views growlers that way.
The document is over a year old, maybe the NSLC's definition has changed since April 2012?

Their definition of a growler has nothing to do with what type of license you have. And there's been no updated definition to date.chalmers wrote:Keep in mind the doc posted by Nash is for Brewpubs, not breweries, though it implies the NSLC as a whole views growlers that way.

$50, but full-sized insulated 1.89L. Dunno if I'd buy one myself, but I may leave strong hints for the wife with xmas around the corner.
