Oh I'm fine with the Engineer cracks too, all in good fun.
The rest though.. don't judge a whole potential brewery on a few blurbs from a logo 'contest' verbiage.
Hopefully these guys are lurking on here as we speak and can give us interested parties a bit of an inside scoop as to their plans and progress.

I'm definitely not judging their ability to make good beer based on their logo design choices. Just making the comment that spec work is bad for any industry and good branding is important, especially when your goal statement is about introducing a craft beer revolution.

What can I say, I don't like the name - whatever.
I was irritated by a bunch of (seemingly) western Canadians saying they're coming to town to save us from MegaSwill... I'm an Upper Canadian transplant and I found it offensive - I can only imagine what lifelong maritimers feel about that cowboy attitude.
I'll judge the beer on its merits or lack there of when I get to taste it.

I think taking their comment about beer revolution to the above is a bit of a stretch. They're just trying to build some hype I imagine.akr71 wrote:a bunch of (seemingly) western Canadians saying they're coming to town to save us from MegaSwill...

As a technologist, poking fun at engineers is part of what we do
It's always in good fun. And honestly I look forward to trying the beer and hope it's great, but even if it tastes like Cantillon I still won't like that name

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

No recruiting yet, figure I should go to a meeting first. The Yeast Wranglers forum is still dead dead dead... but I figure I should meet somebody face to face before trying to revive it (or spamming it telling people to come here, ha).

Tim, perhaps you're having a little problem with converting measurement systems, or maybe living in Calgary just knocks off a few IQ points, but that's near enough 500 TONs, not "a TON".TimG wrote: Living in Calgary now, I'd be pumped to have more nano/mirco/etc brewery start ups happening out here. They have some pretty screwed up regulations that require a start up to make a TON of beer annually:

Hey isnt this gonna be cool guys "We are striving to bring the great traditions of craft beermanship to a new audience and inspire a beer revolution in eastern Canada" WE are getting a craft brewery!!!! I cant wait!!!!! Fuk me.......honestly this couldn't have said in plainer words, people in eastern canada know jack shit all about craft beer and we the great WESTERN CANADIAN SUPERFORCE need to show these uneducated natives what real beer tastes like. Sorry but that alone is enough for me to say fuck you Wrought Iron brew. How are people like Nash and the likes not insulted by this.

A little late to start a revolution here, but I'll wait until I taste the beer and meet them before judging them too harshly...

Agreed. Frankly, in spite of their rather cocky statement, I think the fact that they are choosing to set up shop here means they're aware there is a growing craft beer market!

This isn't really relevant to the brewery, but it given Jeffsmith's comments about design competitions, I thought it might be amusing: http://theconversation.com/how-the-sydn ... rong-14199" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Yet another new brewery planned for Hfx
Hi folks,
Josh here, one of the three co-founders at Wrought Iron. Just discovered this thread and thought I’d address some things.
Full disclosure: at first, I thought our name sucked, too. However, we put a lot of thought into the name’s significance, so it is quite meaningful to us. My grade 11 teacher once told me never to disclose the meaning of a name to your audience. I might crack after a couple of beers, though, so be sure to swing by.
Regarding the logo, I was quite happy with it. Who knows? It may change in the future. As engineers, we don’t always have creative solutions. Rather, we just know what we don’t like.
Regarding the revolution, there was no implication of east coast lagging behind the rest of the movement. There’s a reason we chose to open our brewery here and it had little to do with business. Rather, the revolution referred to an attitude adjustment in craft beer as a whole. I had come from a craft beer scene that was very exclusive and often condescending. I felt very intimidated by it all. What we are hoping to do is make craft beer accessible much in the way California did for wine in the ‘80s. We’re hoping to use the taproom in that manner: to educate, as well as inebriate. Study at your table, then dance on it. Mind you, since that logo contest, the industry has seemed to go this route on its own.
Regarding cowboy attitudes, Angus was born and bred in Cape Breton while Doug and I are from south of Ottawa. Gus worked in Alberta after struggling with student loans here. I moved from Seattle to Calgary to be closer to Angus so we could finish the business plan. Doug left his family and friends of Perth to move out here. He has never left home and is very close with his family, which might give you an idea of how much he wanted to live and work here.
If you’re interested in dropping by and trying our wares, fire me a direct message. My favourite part of my job is showing people around and getting their opinions. Plus, you know, drinking. Hope to hear from ya.

Re: Yet another new brewery planned for Hfx
Hey Josh,
We have our Monthly Brewnosers meeting on Dec 9th where we try new beers or home brew. Why not send some along for the group to sample. Typically a bottle will be shared between the group. However it is in Spryfield so the turnout would be higher. I'm not hosting so not my place to invite, however I'm sure Chalmers would open his door. With that being said I never read through this thread and well honestly too many pints in to be bothered. Good luck with your venture.
