Alexander Keith's brew nearly as old as Canada found in ocean tastes 'pretty good'

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scot ... -1.3391114

Beer nearly as old as Canada tasted of tree fruit, cherry and rotten eggs

Rearchers at Dalhousie University and a Halifax brewer have tested the liquid found inside a historic bottle of Alexander Keith's beer found off the coast of Halifax, confirmed it was beer, and tasted it.

Jon Crouse was scuba diving in the Northwest Arm near Halifax in late November when he discovered the bottle, containing nearly a full beer. From the markings on the bottle, Crouse estimated the bottle was likely manufactured between 1872 and 1890.

Chris Reynolds, co-owner of Stillwell Bar in Halifax, holds a vial of Alexander Keith's beer estimated to be at least 120 years old (Chris Reynolds)

Crouse had planned to let the liquid evaporate over time, leaving the corked bottle as an relic. But when local brewer Chris Reynolds heard about the find, he asked Crouse to save the brew for testing.

Reynolds, co-owner of Stillwell Bar in Halifax, said Dr. Andrew MacIntosh of Dalhousie University volunteered to test the contents for free.

They were able to extract the liquid with a syringe and after several tests, determine it was, in fact, beer.

"We were all very giddy, there was a lot of energy in the lab, we were really excited," said Reynolds. "And then once we got to a stage where we were pretty sure there was a good amount of alcohol and a low enough pH that there wasn't going to be anything in there that would necessarily kill us, we had a little toast."

Insight into Canada's 1st beers

Reynolds said the brew tasted "pretty good" and was likely similar to what brews were intended to taste like in in 1870.

"It tasted, actually, just how it smelled, which I was surprised by," said Reynolds. "We got like a little tree fruit note, a cherry note in there somehow — certainly a lot of sulphur, kind of rotten egg stuff going on."

Reynolds said tasting the historic brew was a once in a lifetime experience he won't soon forget. He said researchers plan to continue testing the liquid in a lab at Dalhousie University, and at another lab in Scotland.

"Once we've finished analyzing the liquid as thoroughly as possible, we can use that and dovetail that with brewers notes of the era, like brewer's logs, and have basically the most complete picture yet of what some of Canada's first beers may have been like," said Reynolds.

The testing at Dalhousie University was documented by a film crew from the Discovery Channel's Daily Planet and will air in an upcoming television episode.

It would appear that the Stubborn Goat has won the tender for the Halifax waterfront location Stillwell pioneered last summer.

On one hand, I'm bummed that Stillwell lost, as I thought the beer garden was pretty much perfectly done, on the other, I like the Stubborn Goat and I'm glad it's another local business that focuses on craft beer and good food, not a macro-peddling and/or pseudo-local entity.

Meanwhile, if the Stillwell gang is as smart as I think they are, they've already got plans to get that beer garden stood up somewhere else this summer; my bet would be on Alderney Landing or King's Wharf.

How much money the Waterfront Development Corporation serves to make was 30% of the weight of the RFP. So given two identical proposals, the one that gave the WDC more money (and took more from the customer, commensurately) would win. the proposed use of the space (the most important part) only got 40% weight.

Worth a FOIA request, if WDC are even subject to that (it's not clear to me)

It's like declaring the winner of a boxing match without releasing the scores. Gross. What a city.

I was down at Stillwell this afternoon. They will definitely be running the Beer Garden again, likely on the Halifax side. They should be able to confirm and release details next month.

I don't wish Stubborn Goat ill will, but Stillwell certainly took on all the risk with their endeavour and deserve success. I'm sure folks will follow them to wherever the new location is this summer.

I don't know how they can justify not releasing the scores.

They released the tender info for the espresso bar in the library, and as much as I wish pavia hadn't won they did score highest on the criteria assessed (I just don't know how the fact that pavia bothers to have coffee shipped from origin countries in central america to a roaster in MILAN then across the atlantic AGAIN after being roasted so your coffee can be both stale and wasteful didn't get taken into account despite environmental impact supposedly being a category - I guess city council just doesn't know their coffee).

There is no reason for the tender for this public space not being a public process unless some sketchy stuff happened.

Good to hear. I am from Ontario and try to support local beer as much as I can afford it. I do wish it was cheaper though.

Cape Breton Beer Fest set for November
'People need to be educated and introduced to craft beer in general,' says event presenter

Image

Cape Breton's craft brewing industry is hoping an event planned for this fall will ferment some buzz.

The inaugural Cape Breton Beer Fest was announced today in Sydney.

"The attitude around beer has become more sophisticated over time," said Marc Botte, chief marketing officer with 902 Advertising Group, one of the event's presenters.

"We think that this is a great event to highlight that, to bring craft beers to a wider market, to expose more people to it, and to help promote our two local craft breweries who are doing amazing work. To kind of showcase them to both Cape Bretoners and people from out of province," he said.

The Cape Breton Beer Fest: Craft Beer and Holiday Cheer! will take place on Nov. 19 at the Joan Harris Cruise Pavilion in Sydney with music, vendor booths and food prepared by local restaurants.
Cultivating tastes for different brews

Big Spruce Brewing opened in Nyanza in 2013 and Breton Brewing opened in Sydney last year.

Showcasing the industry as a whole will hopefully give a boost to the two local brewers, Botte said.

About 30-35 brewers from across Canada and the United States will also be at the show.

"In terms of the amount of beer sold, craft beer is still in the minority," Botte said.

"People need to be educated and introduced to craft beer in general. Bringing in more vendors with more variety and more different flavours, and having a big flashy event, will encourage people to take the plunge and try something they might not necessarily try," he said.

"If they like certain craft beers, then they may become craft beer drinkers and that benefits our two breweries here in Cape Breton."

That's cool! I wonder if their products will be readily available for homebrewers (maybe even as a group buy option for brewnosers?)

Yes. Alan made it out to a Brewnosers meeting last year, and is keen on working with homebrewers, and the local shops.
