Gin and tonic was not on my radar 5 years ago but on a hot summer day its great.

For me though the king of gin-based cocktails is a negroni: gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. Not for everyone (too bitter for most people) but a brilliant pre-dinner drink , Campari being a trie digestive bitters.

For me it's an any time at all drink but especially as a pre-dinner cocktail before a rich meal. Also easy enough to make at home if you've got the stuff: 1 part gin, 1 part campari, 1 part sweet vermouth, stirred with lots of ice, served neat (or with a floater cube or two) in a rocks glass and garnished with an orange slice. Some folks will add a shot of angostura or even orange bitters. Some people play with the proportions a little. But that's the classic recipe.
