Upper Canada Dark

Post by ralphd » Thu Nov 27, 2014 3:26 pm

I lived in Ontario for almost 15 years, and my favorite off-the-shelf beer was Upper Canada Dark. When I moved back to NS I was disappointed that it is not available here. I made a Cooper's Dark kit beer, and it was pretty good, but didn't have the same bitterness of the hops used in Upper Canada Dark.
Any recommendations for a kit or even a commercial beer that comes close to the taste of Upper Canada Dark?

Sounds like a Sleeman's product badged differently for sale in Ontario. Maybe a Sleeman's Dark is the same?????

Never had it, but some commercial beers of similar style:

Boxing rock Crafty Jack
Picaroons 104th Regiment
Garrison Nut brown ale

You could also try the Festa brew brown ale kits with a nice english yeast.

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA

It was definitely a different beer... at least until Sleeman's bought them. Its been so long since I had one, but gm- suggestions are solid.
