Hi all,
I am new to the group, and sought it out because I was looking for like-minded people who are interested in getting together for a tasting. I am a long time beer enthusiast, but complete newbie when it comes to identifying specific flavours and I want to get good at it before I start making my own brews. I was looking at purchasing a kit, (FlavorActiV, Aroxa and the Seibel Institute all ship to Canada). Would anyone in The Halifax area be interested in splitting the costs and getting together for a tasting? If there are any BJCP folks who are able to order the BJCP kit and/or help out with a tasting, that's even better and please count me in!

Hello Mike, and welcome. :cheers2: Chris Chalmers (one of the judges) was saying he could maybe do something like this later in the year I think. Sounds like a good plan. As time goes on I'm getting to taste stuff like diacetyl and oxidised beer. I'd like to learn positive aspects of beers as well as the faults, so that I can strive towards making good beer, rather than simply avoiding the bad stuff and faults, but both are probably equally important. I think going to some of the meetings would be good for that, and you'd enjoy the meetings.

I think I would be in too. The time would be my only worry. With Mark in the valley and me in HFX I don't see an easy "Tuesday night" club.

Just noticed the spin-off thread on Rickard's Red as well, so I think I will start there and keep an ear out for any mention of a tasting get together later in the year. Thanks for the heads up!

Heading to Seaport Beer fest this weekend as well, and hoping the servers will be knowledgable. May try asking some intelligent questions this year as opposed to just racing to get through all of the stalls, lol.

Been busy doing the Beer Servers course and exam part of the cicerone program. I enjoyed the course immensely and learnt a lot. Full of history and information on all the different styles from the different regions of the world + practicalities of storing and serving beer, tasting beer, food paring etc.

I think I'll go on to the actual cicerone exam next year.

The other course (eTips) was also interesting, about legally and responsibly serving alcohol, dealing with intoxicated belligerent customers, learning how to identify fake ID's, factors affecting levels of intoxication, assessing levels of intoxication, stages of, laws around alcohol etc. etc ...also interesting.

Congratulations, GRock!

There *were* plans to hold the Certified Cicerone exam in Halifax at some point, so hopefully you will not have to travel far for it.

Thanks a lot guys. I wasn't fishing for complements though. I just wanted to say I really enjoyed it, the way it was presented etc. was very well done, and wanted to pass that on in case anyone else had been thinking about doing it. You have to take the Beer Servers exam first before you can do the Certified Cicerone exam.

Chris, yes, that's what I was hoping about the cicerone exam next year.

Fun stuff. It's a lot of work (labour of love) for a working, family man.

We should get back to the "online tastings" and posting the scores.

Yes, I need to get back into that. I've been buying style examples and drinking them while reading up on them, like Adam suggested.

I like to see if I'm off base and comparing out scores keeps me in line.

Also I would like to see if the judges agree with us.

I had the Bone Shaker last night, it was too sweet for the style but I was not reading the guideline.
